What was your first RPG?

Starting from the Skyrim thread, an interesting sub-topic has been started.

My first video game RPG was Dragon Warrior followed closely by Final Fantasy. We had gotten Dragon Warrior as a gift. Final Fantasy we got when my brother convinced me to give him my piggy bank money to help him pay for it. Whether or not he was just using me to take my money, was still worth it. That was a great game.

However before that I had gotten into playing HeroQuest with my brother and his friends. (The Warhammer based board game)

Looked it up: Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday.  I think it's the only true RPG I've ever owned for PC except Fallout 3 and STALKER.  I liked the Battletech series but a) Mechwarrior wasn't RPG (had some RPG style elements though) and b) I didn't play battltech RPG until college.

I'm picky in what constituted a RPG: to me it must allow you to take the role you want to play, not just allow you to put stuff together and talk to people.  If what you do doesn't form the "opinion" of the AI players about you then it's no different then Quake with dialog boxes.

My first one was Legend of Zelda (the original) WTF !!!
After that it was on to SNES where I hit Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past hard and heavy (obviously).
Then dabbled with a few misc ones at like Dungeon Master, Arcana, and the Breath of Fire series. Finished Illusion of Gaia.
Then came my first taste of Squaresoft with FF3(US). I WAS HOOKED from then on out. Hell I followed evrything they did from that point on. Secret of Mana,  Secret of Evermore, all the available FF series. Even went back and did FF2, wife finished FF1 Mystic Quest. Then on to Crono trigger.
PlayStation seen FF7 of course. Only thing that pulled me away from RPGs was getting hooked on DOOM for the SNES.
But in one fell swoop the company i loved single handedly crushed my love of RPGs, "FF8" broke my heart. I hated it !
That was it, but it was ok, i had found a new love. id software's SNES DOOM was so awesome it was all I could play. All those other squaresoft RPGs was starting to be played less and less.
After Palystation's version of DOOM I was even more hooked. Then came my beloved and forever missed N64 with Golden Eye, DOOM64, and of course Quake64 )))
After going to PC and getting Quake II I have never played a RPG ever again until Oblivion and now Skyrim.

Oh, you mean the beloved Sony PalsyStation! Yeah, those were fun except for when the wheelchair would flip over backwards.

Trying to think if any of the games I played on my old Commodore 64 back in the 80's could've been considered RPGs. Perhaps Caverns of Khafka.

I remember one of my favorites to play on Commodore64 used to be a shooter called High Noon. People say Doom was the first shooter game. Yeah, not really.

i spent my child hood years playing FPS games and the occasional little action adventure like tomb raider first actual RPG i played was probably final fantasy 8, love that game lol

at least the first one that was memorable enough i can recall it xD probably played some fucked up old one on atari or sega before that

I had that one.  That was awesome.  I think I had more C64 games then my PC+NES+SNES+N64+GC+Wii combined.  I filled up a 12" long disc caddy, maybe two. 
The C64 had a first person shooter-type game, I forget the name.  I think you were a robot.
C64 had some text-adventures that could be counted as RPG's (if you're counting Zelda).  Great time for arcade-shooters though.  No indie game can come close to playing a C64 game.

Guess it depends on what you call an RPG

Adventure, DnD, Dungeon, Rogue, Hack  Moria, Larn, Akalabeth, Wizardry and on and on and on and on..............  All kinds of stuff by sierra - getting ready to dump a bunch - not much call for 8"  5 1/4" discs and cassette tapes these days .geeze.... now you got me remembering I'm a geezer!    Way to go!  Think I'll go flip a bit....

Holy shit, you're right! Almost positive I had that one too, but I forget the name of it. Maybe that old diskette rolodex thingy is buried in my basement somewhere. I bet you had Richard Petty's Talladega too.

I think I did.  Contra, Echelon, Chernobyl, Rambo First Blood Part III... man, the list is so extensive I can't even think of half of them.  I was using my C64 until a couple years after college I think.  Awesome machine.

Yeah, I remember Chernobyl. Never got the point of that game though. I'd always make the reactors overheat and blow on purpose, but nothing cool ever happened, no three headed russian children.

I used to have another one, I think it was like a battleship kinda game. You'd sink other ships, hit submarines, sometimes have planes to shoot down AA fire. Sound familiar?
