I made it back to where the pile of ashes were...but the funny door is shut again so I can't get to it. Tried opening a save from when the guy was alive...and now the Leader of the Greybeards refuses to teach me his "hello"...(being vague to not spoil too much)...oh well...I'l await a patch.

TMF, not sure what quest is brokin for you, unless its one from the mage college, but i tried this last night to see if it worked and it did. Go back to the cave, not inside the box, but inside the cave only.
bring up the console and type player.placeatme 0002D514 finish that part of the quest then target him again in the console and type disable.

If I knew what quest it was i could find the code to finish "just that part" of the quest.

Yo, DS, was Skyrim the game you said had hunting in it? I still play Deer Hunter 2005 every once in a while, might wanna check out Skyrim if it's worth playing. Everyone else seems pretty enamored with it, but I'm not a big fan of role playing games. Although I did play through Warcraft 3 and the expansion pack a long while back out of boredom. I ended up using the cheat codes though because I was more interested in seeing the story progress than playing for the strategy thrill of it. See, not a big fan of role playing games. :D Anyway, I already got a copy of it, haven't installed it yet. Are the weapons kinda stupid or what? What kinda weapons? Do you use calls and lures, etc? Spot and stalk with stealth involved or is it just sit in one place and wait for an animal to walk by? I dunno, just explain a bit about it. Is it worth me fooling with it?

There's hunting, per se,but you can lterally run up to a deer moose or elk and bop it on the head to kill it,so I ouldn't call it a hunting simulator. Its more of an aspect of the tundra enviorment and raw material gathering to hunt the wildlife, unless you like hunting dragons...foxes eat the rabbits, bears eat the goats, wolves eat the deer, and you can specialize in smithing and make better weapons and armour for yourself.

And through a combination of consoling or stupidity I did manage to get the scroll I needed, and managed to off the big baddie. Now the only real conflict is between the warring factions, and I found that a lot less interesting and after listening to them accusing each other of war crimes,a lot more distastefull. With 100 in stealth archery and light armour I've seen to have exhausted the driving need to achieve in it,so I'll put it down and await some DLC to come out that isn't Horse Armour and then rediscover it after modding it to death, nudity patches and whatever strangeness the community cooks up...

Haven't figured out how to marry anyone, but since I was playing a female I suppose that's just dandy. The next go around will be heavy armour 2 handed weapons or a straight mage. The lack of both buffs and spell creation is disapointing...I was enjoying giving my orc tank 175 STR for half a minute and wailing on things with a daedric sledgehammer in Oblivion...I may drift back to that. Or even Morrowind...never scratched the surface of that game really...and it's gotten graphical makeovers in the meantime. Until Diablo 3 comes out.

Foc, i was refering to Oblivion when i mentioned hunting. Hunting in Skyrim isn't quite as fun as it was in Oblivion. In Oblivion (unless your level was pretty high) you couldn't catch anything in the wild, you had to be very stealthy and actually hunt it with a Bow and Arrow. In skyrim (like TMF said) you can pretty much just run up to animals and lay'um out except for Large moose, woolly mammoths and the Giants. But you can hunt big game in Skyrim too. Using Bow and Arrow you can be stealthy and sneek hunt Sabertooths etc. These animals will attack AND kill your ass quick at low levels. :)
My funnest part was stealth hunting big game, get the initial shot, pull out my knife and wait for it's charge and try to finish it off with that and NOT die.
At higher levels it's pull out a couple of handfuls of mage fire, launch twice, kill it, call next.

But to answer your question about worth installing: HELL YES IT'S WORTH IT !!!
You don't have to like RPGs to have a blast in this game. It isn't what I call a die hard RPG. Leveling up is just not that important unless you want it to be. It could just as easily be considered an Open World FPS with massive stories embedded into it along with critical missions (rather than "quests" if you will). :)

TMF: yes Morrowind did a HUGE graphical makeover. VERY impressive to say the least.
On a side note, joining sides in Skyrim is a blast, just the few quests, er, uh, "missions" i've went on is pretty damn good and very interesting.
Plus, if you haven't noticed there are already 100s of mods out for Skyrim. And yes nudity is a few of them plus new body mods.

Agree hunting in oblivion was more fun.  Skyrim needs white tail..

Skyrim has more wildlife to look for.  The moose are easy targets, but most of the (non-lethal) others move away from you pretty well and scamper out of sight.  I rarely get one after that, so that might be a good challenge for you.

Wolves are fun. Groups of 2 usually, you just wander the woods and boom, they are attacking you.  The 'game' I've made out of it is seeing them first and taking the first one out with an arrow,  and having the next arrow drawn before the other one gets to me.  Tough to spot usually with underbrush and trees everywhere.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by3reaLDUPg

Watched this vid and it demonstrates the hunting experience in Skyrim very well. Except for a short stint inside a cabin.
Shows most of the animals, and a bunch of the different scenery.

(Watch out for giants,  big cats, and mammoths.  You can hunt them too if you want but they will tear you apart :) )

I installed it and fired it up about a day or two ago. After the first minute and a half little dialogue scene in the back of the wagon, I was madly beating on my keyboard looking for the quit button. :D Yeah, not my kinda game.

That's too bad.

I was disappointed with it myself at that point.  The real fun of it is when you get out of the intro stuff and start off on your own.

There's always q2

Agreed;

The game seems inclined toward hand-holding until one exits the initial scenario and arrives in Skyrim.

After that -- you're on your own. <- which is my fav. part of the game

I was just overwhelmed with an embarrassingly nerdy feeling. And I liked the Lord of the Rings movies... sort of. I didn't delete it yet. Maybe I'll try suffering through it further at some point in the future when I have nothing else interesting to play.

Suffer through the opening...no worse than what Halflife put one through with its 10 minute tram car ride. Its a game you'll be playing for a decade at least...people will be modding and improving the damn thing for that long.

I'm reinstalling Morrowind atm,and downloading a compliation of graphical imrovements that'll be about 2 gigs or more once the chunks are assembled. I never completed the main quest of that one ever, and I've had the original game discs for the decade it came out. Nothing like being a low level character and stumbling across your first daedric ruins where the monsters can 1 punch you deader than dead, just to steal some daedric weapon left on an alter just to run away before the daedra it summons eats you.

I must say Skyrim has disappointed me on some levels...Bethesda has recycled various things from Oblivion and Morrowind like soundtracks and voices. And no daedra hardy at all...and the monsters are so typical too:rats, wolves spiders...all done to death in every RPG. Morrowind had weird critters, and some that were just atmosphere.
Oh well, guess the modding community will fill in the gaps. With fire breathing My Little Ponies and Zoidberg crabs!

downloaded this on sat thru steam.. I've put a few hours in roaming around, learning some of the basic crafting and such..

highlights so far:

- grabbed a salmon barehanded while swimmin in a lake.. lol'd.
- got shanghai'd by my first squad of mercenaries for thieving from some old witch's cabin.. and was pleasantly surprised to die in combat a couple times till I got the hang of it.
- found a nifty sunken castle-dungeon and got raped by necromancers till I learned how to pepper them with arrows first, then switch to sheild and sword for the finish.
- ingredients system.. I like that you have to eat stuff to figure out its effects.

gonna put a few more hours in tonight..
