We have any Linux Masters? 8) Need help please
« on: January 26, 2006, 12:20:58 AM »
Hey all, I recently Installed SUSE 10.0 64-Bit Edition and got it installed and working great.  As far as I can tell all hardware is working properly.  Even the optical output on the soundcard is producing 5.1 sound as I hoped for (had lots of issues with all integrated hardware and the video card with Red Hat Linux 9).  Got Cediga/PointToPlay installed and working properly but will not have a chance to activate it for a coupple weeks.

Anyways, I read online that it is possible to install Quake 4 and Quake 2 on any Linux kernel operating system above the listed minimum version.  I'm not really concerned with Quake 2 at the moment because I would like to test high end video on both the Windows XP 64-Bit OS that I had installed and SUSE 10.0 64-Bit thats installed now.  Aperantly ID Software released an ?installer? that allows you to install Quake 4 off the Windows version CD on a Linux kernel OS.  The file is .run and have had 0 success with it.  Can't get it to do anything at all.  Maybe it won't work with SUSE 10.0???  The "how to" file sucks bad. :help:

ID Software - http://www.idsoftware.com
Official Quake 4 - http://www.quake4game.com
How To Install - http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/linux/quake4/
ID Software FTP - ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake4/
Said File "quake4-linux-1.0.6.x86.run" - ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake4/linux/quake4-linux-1.0.6.x86.run

Don't think hardware is at all an issue but heres the PC's specs anyways:
OS - SUSE 10.0 64-Bit  Edition
CPU - AMD Athlon 64 3200+ S939
MOBO - A8N-SLI Delux
Video Card - PCIX 16X, ATI x700 PRO 256mb DDR3, unfortunatly its not SLI compatible.
Ram - 1024mb Kingston HyperX Gamer Edition PC3200
Power Supply - Antec TruBlue 480w with 24-pin connecter and dual 12v rails capable of 28a each
Controller Card - Integrated Silicon Image SATA Raid (0, 1, 0+1, 5 or 10) and unused integrated NVidea Raid (0, 1, 0+1, 5 or 10)
Hard Drive(s) - Two Western Digital SATA 7200rpm 8mb Cache 80gig
Hard Drive Configuration - SATA Raid 0 Striped
Sound - Integrated 8-Channel Realtek ALC850
Network - Integrated Dual Gigabit Wired, One is NVidea nForce 4 Gigabit and the other is Marvell 88E81001 Gigabit with Virtual Cable Tester

Hope someone has been threw this and can help, Thanks. :righteous:

I run Q2 and the dedicated server version of Q4 on FC4 (32bit). When you installed Suse did you also install the 32 bit libs? so you can run 32 bit apps(Q4)  and the the only 64bit version of either program that I am awre of is R1CH's 64 bit version of Q2.

I have not messed with the 64bit Linux stuff much, I am finishing up assembling my new compy which will get 64 bit FC4.

Reformated again, decided to cut the 64-bit out of the picture to reduce variables until things are working.  Installed the 32-bit version of SUSE and have the same results.  A downloaded .run file that doesn't do anything when I doubble click it (it trys to load in a text editor and then gets some error).  I'm beginning to think that SUSE wont work with the given file.  My best bet may be to just wait till I get Cediga working properly (www.transgaming.com).

1) open a terminal window (a console window) in the folder where you have the "run" file.  Typically if, say, you have the run file on your desktop you can just right mouse button over a blank spot on your desktop then choose Open Terminal.

2) In the window, type this:

       ./quake4-linux-1.0.6.x86.run

3) post what it says if it doesn't work

Yeah, Defiant should have you on the right track, a lot of thing wont (or we not intended) run from a click or double click like winders, you have to run them from the command line.

What vid card are you running and have you installed the lpenGL Linux drivers for them, most default open GL drivers in Linux leave a lot to be desired and the vid card OpenGL drivers will have you asking why are my frame rates slower in Linux than winders.

Ya, I think you have me on the right track now.  Still 1 slight problem thoegh.  When I type that in the XConsole it says "Bash: ./quake4-linux-1.0.6.x86.run: Permission Denied", even when I'm loged in under the root user.

Was the file properly downloaded?  If it is still downloading or download was interrupted you may not be able to run it.

in the console type

    ls -al

to see the file size, then compare it to that at the Id Software page.

Like console says, perhaps there is a permission problem

   chmod +x ./quake4-linux-1.0.6.x86.run

Then try to run it and post the result.

Went to Best Buy today and got me a 120gig HD for $60.  Glad I found it when I did, was getting tired of the slow hard drive and was ready to format my XP raid set.  Just got done re-installing SUSE and am about to start installing Quake again.  Thanks for all the help guys, I may be able to get it running tonight.  I'll post an update, will try the mount thing,  tryed using the mount and eject on the GUI (right click cd drive) with no success.  I don't know much about the linux cli but have had decent sucess so far using my notebook as a referance tool while I work on the desktop.

Thanks,

Got the ATI video card drivers installed perfictly, Quake 4 is completely installed.  When I try to run it the opengl errors as I suspected it would.  Any ideas?  I cut out all the stuff that initialized properly, this is the section that posts error.  After all these years of frustration with Linux based OS I'm finally starting to realize what all the hype is about.  I  have never felt this confident that when I get something working it will not fail on me or get a wierd random error.  I feel a since of control over my PC now that cannot be explained.  My PC is not a ticking time bomb waiting to crash at any moment.  The method used to modify the kernel is awesome.  It is not carelessly slaped together the way Windows does with its kernel not to mention the mess Windows makes of the registry.

Thanks,
Gorgut
