Any reason servers like NADL kick for a modified rg_hum? I really don't see the advantage for a modified railgun hum except for aesthetic effect, so why kick for it? It shouldn't kick for a modified rg_hum in the first place.

Come to think of it, why do servers fail file checks for a modified RG hum? It's not like people cheat with it; they just use a slightly modified one like the Q3 hum. Maybe we can not make it kick/ fail file checks on the servers?

People can use it to locate a player who is holding the railgun. The sound is heard by everyone when the railgun is out. In a rail duel that can be a big advantage to have your opponents letting you know where they are.

Yes, but if you're using a rail hum THAT LOUD that you can hear someone from a room or two away, it would be at the expense of you hearing that annoyingly loud railgun hum at the same time. Also, not to mention that it's only used when people have a rail, which people tend to use at long distances, which you probably wouldn't be able to hear that far.

In short, if you're using a rail hum that loud, it'd do more harm than good.

i dont even hear the hum sound anymore, i think it got disabled maybe for having a modified one? if i had a modified one, i didnt know it. But I used to hear it, now i dont. and its a disadvantage NOT being able to hear it.

same reason it kicks for modified footsteps: it provides an advantage to locate someone more effectively who is sneaking in duel.

a lot of people claim "oh I just use ones I find asthetically pleasing" with the footsteps, yet there are almost none of those out there that are noticably different from stock and there are a fuckload of very loud steel steps available which provide a huge advantage on corner shots.

The thing with the rg hum is not necessarily volume. It comes down to being able to identify it seperate from the background noises of a map.

The stock rg hum actually sounds like a lot of machinery hum sounds in q2 and can be easily mistaken for background noise.

replace it with a beep like the bfg, a quiet music clip or pretty much any sound that isnt just a low hum and magically it stands out like a sore thumb when it was not meant to.

I don't buy "asthetically pleasing" when half the people these days are using 20 second long armor pickup sounds to circumvent the play command block, and guys like bonzai fail only steps and hum every time they connect (the only 2 useful sounds to alter in terms of enemy movement sounds).

If you have one that isn't providing a noticeable advantage, submit it for review and a whitelist entry can be added for it.

Well, since the Q3 rail hum people seem to use a lot, I don't think it should be flagged as a cheat. If you're going to flag rg_hum as a cheat sound, you might as well blacklist sounds like the watr_in sound that gives off a loud buzzing noise whenever you enter, or player sounds that say "75" or "50".

rg_hum and footsteps are sounds that indicate where someone is.

that is why they come up in the check, whether your particular rg_hum isn't particularly more advantageous or not.

if you turn ambient sounds off it disables your own railgun hum so I could see how it could be a used for advantage...not against it personally but to each his own I suppose.

I agree with you...the water out noise, loud re-spawn noises, "kill me now" all kind of fall along the same lines. It's not that you couldn't learn the 75/50/25 health sounds for male/female with any large degree of difficulty, but when it screams out "kill me now" it definitely takes the skill of having to learn the differentiation out of the equation entirely.

imo if anticheat isn't forced on all servers they should atleast kick for bad files like they do on irtdm

The 20 second armor pickup sound is pointless.

I have to admit to trying that, but that was before the first line of code for anticheat was even thought of.
What I did discover is that it can work, but there are sounds that if they are played, they cancel the armor sound being played.
So it's inconsistent as hell.

I think my pak even has one in it still.

In q1 if you made a falling sound after picking up the quad it stopped the quad sound.
I forget the map, but you could drop onto the quad from a ways up, and no one would hear it being picked up.

Never experimented with it to see what sounds stop the armor in q2.
