Just having a few beers, dipping into nostalgia a bit and thought I'd share.

^ my favorite pantera song, although I do like pretty much everything on the pre-southern trend kill albums more than most metal done since.

They did an awesome cover of a Whackmaster classic for the Detroit Rock City soundtrack.

Pantera - Cat Scratch Fever (Ted Nugent cover)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3twRkEBvnfI

One of my favorites from Far Beyond Driven, not that any song on that album isn't good.

Pantera - Shedding Skin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_igViwDG_nw

Also a huge fan of Anslemo's other projects, especially Down (featuring members of Pantera, Crowbar, Corrosion of Conformity). They're supposed to be at the Masquerade in Atlanta this weekend. I don't go to many shows anymore, but I'm DEFINITELY gonna catch this one. Down is little less hard edged than Pantera and more sludgey, kinda bluesy, what you might describe as something like "progressive stoner rock/metal". Lots of different really cool elements mixed up in it. I'll post a bunch of different ones to hopefully demonstrate their variety of songs.

Down's first album was a little more straightforward metal.

Down - Bury Me In Smoke (from Down I - NOLA)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zay8kCgci2E

Down - Stone The Crow (from Down I - NOLA)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBLbrJxGtro

After the first album, they started mixing in a lot more effects for the guitars and put a lot more effort into the production. Really cool to listen to through some good headphones with the volume up to hear all the great subtle details in the recording.

Down - Ghosts Along the Mississippi (from Down II - A Bustle In Your Hedgerow)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH4nmmhv-c8

Down - Learn From This Mistake (from Down II - A Bustle In Your Hedgerow)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFT6TFw7e_w

This one was probably the biggest oddball track on the whole album. Very jazzy sounding. A lot of metal fans I've let hear this one said they didn't like it, but it's one of my favorites from that album.

Down - Lies, I Don't Know What They Say But... (from Down II - A Bustle In Your Hedgerow)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRp8Ra25O-c

Down - On March The Saints (from Down III - Over The Under)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuEX2n3YDfA

This one kinda reminds me of some Doors or Pink Floyd a little bit. Really

Down - Nothing In Return/Walk Away (from Down III - Over The Under)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J4trNtRwoc

Phil Anselmo also has another band called Superjoint Ritual with Hank Williams III on bass. The first album was a LOT closer to the old Pantera stuff than Down.

Superjoint Ritual - The Alcoholik (from 1st album, Use Once And Destroy)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1CuPCHH_pE

Superjoint Ritual - Fuck Your Enemy (from 1st album, Use Once And Destroy)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NewEBRKFwXg

Superjoint Ritual - Ozena (from 1st album, Use Once And Destroy)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rekblRBLQWk

Superjoint Ritual - The Destruction of a Person (from 2nd album, A Lethal Dose of American Hatred)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cL_pMlXonrQ

Superjoint Ritual - Dress Like a Target (from 2nd album, A Lethal Dose of American Hatred)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QV6cZgZJSsA

Superjoint Ritual - Permanently (from 2nd album, A Lethal Dose of American Hatred)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNbQknfwMcg

It's fucking sad that a lot of younger/younger-ISH fans of Pantera never really got the chance to learn about Down. When their first album came out back in the mid 90's maybe a year after Far Beyond Driven, they (Down) got a good bit of press since Pantera had really broken through the underground with Far Beyond Driven. But since then, unless you were just a fan of Anselmo and already followed him, you probably didn't get an opportunity to hear about Down and Superjoint Ritual since major forms of music media like MTV stopped covering metal. If you ever get a chance to see them live, DO IT. They've only got a couple of dates left in the US before they ship down to South America to play some shows in November.

Found an old video of Darrell doing a guitar clinic at some small-ish guitar shop in Texas. Dunno exactly when this was. Probably sometime around 1994-ish.
