I started on an acoustic guitar at the ripe old age of 19. I picked acoustic, not because I was a folkie, but because you could get a generic one cheap and you didn't need an amp. I taught myself by playing along to very simple stuff on records. I learned a lot from CCR's Bayou Country. Then I bought a chord book and learned all the basic ones and the not so basic ones in odd keys. All was going well but the tips of my fingers were killing me. I didn't know about light gauge strings yet. I went to the music store and rented a Les Paul electric. This thing was like silk - so easy to play chords and notes. Goodbye acoustic. Then it was on to Led Zep and all the regular rockers of the time.

Over time you continue to improve in both speed and technique. Or like a lot of people you will hit a brick wall and just plateau in your ability. Whatever...

If you have always enjoyed good music, Armor, you will find playing an instrument will enhance that process even further, and make you more discerning in what you listen to.  It's a great gift.

I guess I started playing so early... and the fact that it was MANY MANY beers ago, so it's hard to remember a lot of shit from my younger years... but I don't even remember my fingertips hurting like hell the first few months I started plinking around. About all I remember is how insanely thick the callouses on my fingertips were in my teenage years. Back then I used to play several hours a day, sometimes all day long. I would sometimes take a pair of beard trimming scissors and actually cut off part of the callouses because the tips of my fingers just looked hideous with the tops layers of skin peeling and hanging off. I remember I used to be able to touch the side of a pot of boiling water with the tips of my fingers and it wouldn't even hurt, hehe.

Then when I was 16, my dad bought me my Ibanez electric for xmas. He had the idea that I could play the new guitar, and he'd start playing my old used BC Rich Mockingbird and I could teach him how to play. I think we sat down only twice for me to teach him some things. He played for maybe 5 minutes both times and had to stop because he said his fingers were hurting. So after that second, he just gave up on the idea. Kinda bummed me out a little. I was hoping he would get into playing guitar. That would've been GREAT for me. Usually when he would get into a new hobby, he would always go nuts with it and start buying tons of crap. I figured it would be great because he'd start buying all kinds of amps and guitars and effects pedals and shit. He used to be into bicycles for a while. He ended up getting some expensive assed road bicycle with pedals that special shoes would lock into, he had some kinda expensive Swiss-made bicycle stand for working on bicycles, he even had some really expensive machine that would mount a bicycle rim on it so you could adjust the spokes and make the wheel perfectly in line and straight. So as you can see, he didn't take hobbies lightly, they were serious shit to him, lol. So yeah, I had visions of him buying us both 100watt JCM900 Marshall stacks, Les Paul customs, maybe even collecting a few nice vintage guitars. But unfortunately, I couldn't convince him to ever pick up a guitar again, so that fantasy went up in smoke.

Older thread but a good one.  :)

I was looking around at old instruments in the classical family and came across this beast:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten-string_guitar

Now that's a classical guitar.  One of my professors actually played one of these in a recital, and it was a rare awesome treat.  Only way he had access to one is because he's a world-level classical guitar dealer.  Hard to believe that a guitar can handle a range close to the piano, but it is possible with one of these with specialized tuning.  I want one, but not for the price to have one made lol.

An instrument I've been dying to try out is one of these things:  http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ce/Burner_Guitar.jpg

The harp electric guitar.  It's said to have one of the most eerie, fully enthralling sounds of any guitar out there.  They come in classical/acoustics as well.  Want one of each.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harp_guitar

Just for kicks, here's a 13-string classical:  http://www.luth.org/downloads/AL83/chiavi04.jpg  Just keeps getting better and better.  I'm waiting for a 20 string.  :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Cezxt08X9E&feature=related  Beautiful recording on a classical 11 string harp guitar combo.  Talented player as well.  :)

Yet another version of a harp guitar, this time with bass harp strings.  This is an acoustic harp guitar as well, with steel strings instead of nylon.  This guy is amazing:

And lo, they didst rock.  And there was much rejoicing.

Got to speak with Tosin breifly afterward; basically "you guys kicked ass! thanks for playing in san diego" kind of thing was all I could think of.  But anyway, was fun.
