I self taught myself with just experimenting really.. It took me a few months to realize that every two frets over on guitar is one key over on piano. Then, when I looked up actual A-G chords it was more interesting to learn instead of forcing myself to be like "ok, this is F...(wtf is this combination of frets / strings F!?)".. I liked playing power chords in the beginning more than anything else, lol, so my right hand developed a lot faster than my left. If I could go back and change something, I would learn the blue guitar scale, major scale, and minor scale a good, 8 months before I discovered them(internet browsing). Especially the blues guitar scale, great scale to play around with when learning.

Animals As Leaders - "CAFO"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmfzWpp0hMc&ob=av3e

Listen to the whole song, has layers like a fucking onion.   I'm interested in the type of guitar the dude is playing on lead, I might have seen one and not have registered it but I've never seen one with that many strings, any info people?

Plus....the dude plays the shit out of it, full instrumental band itself and they do very well.

Wow, what a great good song.

I rarely listen to metal, but I think I'd listen to it more if I found more bands that were purely instrumental. Vocals are kinda of the last thing I look for in a metal song unless it's power metal or something similar.

So some dork can play some popular song after practicing it 5million times

I'm more impressed with someone that can just sit down and PLAY without it being something they heard and practiced before.

I am too, but as Charlie Parker said: Master the instrument, master the music, then forget all that shit and play.

It's tempting to skip to step 3.  I don't think most humans can reach 3 w/out 1+2.

:dohdohdoh:

Side note: It's helpful to me to just "see" someone else on youtube playing a song.  There's an amount of half-ass tab out there by some individual who transcribed it w/out playing it.  So it's nice to see it actually played.

Well yeah, obviously it takes practice. It just so happens that practice is the part that annoys the hell out of your parents and neighbors... and me when someone makes me watch videos of some emo douchebag playing Randy Rhoads solos.

Yeah, I've seen a few posted around the web of songs I already know how to play and they tab them COMPLETELY fucking wrong. You're always better off going to a music store and using their tab book section as a public library.

To me learning to play other peoples music is a great step in learning to make your own.   You can learn cool chord progressions and just fucking jam with them.  I cant speak for guitar but the youtube tutorials on piano and music production  are not just people showing off. Some love to share and teach there craft.

:bump:  love this fucking song.

I had this part of the song stuck in my head all day yesterday:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StSty86--eQ  :righteous:

Also, here's a detailed tutorial breaking down the intro sweep lick, in both standard tuning and the non-standard tuning used by Tosin.  I've advanced the video to the part where he plays it at full tempo.  The playing is amazingly clean:

Damn, good fuckin info.   :yessign:   Thanks for the run down man, pretty cool to see how things evolve.   I wish I could play the guitar, I'm told if I want to learn I should start out on an acoustic guitar until I build enough hand coordination to move to more complex things.    How did you guys that do know begin and what did you begin on?

15-30 minutes per day(at least) playing the basic open chords is where you need to start. It's hard to make a clean sounding chord to begin with....don't give up! Then start the frustrating process of switching between chords with the proper timing.  It's not easy.  If it was, everybody would be doing it instead of playing that stupid guitar hero crap. Frustration made me give up the first time (35 years ago), but I stuck with it and have made baby step progress ever since. I can play things I never dreamed of back then. I mostly play bass with bands, but occasionally play keys/piano and they all help you understand the scales and chord combinations.  The main point is: unless you are tone deaf or lazy you can learn how to play guitar.....just not overnight.

What do ya'll think of animals as leaders? I've clicked on a few songs.... some emo/weird dudes that I know like this band, and this is the best song I've heard from them thus far... I'd have to hear more though. I really didn't even start getting into this song until 2-2:30 through.

Reminds me of architects at times.

A couple months ago I had put the album on repeat for a couple days while coding.  On the plus side there was never a track that caused me to want to skip it or exclude it from the list; but it took awhile before several of the songs grew on me.

Generally I think I ended up liking any given track on average "ok", with about half the tracks having occasional moments that would send me to the audio player app to bump up the star rating because, "holy shit that part there is awesome."

For example, on track #3 (Thoroughly at Home) the first part of the song didn't do much for me, except by contrast with the change at 1:36 ... that slow heavy groove in the middle kind of makes the song for me.

Overall what I particularly appreciate though are the guitarist's harmonic sensibilities.  It's the same thing I like about Steve Vai and Zappa's compositions, except Animals as Leaders is more listenable to me (I ultimately end up excluding 90% of the Via / Zappa tracks from my playlists due to the tomfoolery and shennanigans on most of the tracks :D )

There's some bands that are so out in left field, that's just kinda how you have to go about trying to listen to them. A buddy of mine I was in a band with for a while gave me his copy of a Dillinger Escape Plan CD (Infinity Calculated I think was the album). If you've ever tried listening to Dillinger Escape Plan, it's super fuckin crazy sounding. Like... worse than Messhugah. WAY worse. It's like one of those acid fusion jazz groups they play at 2am on some random community college radio station swapped instruments with a death metal band. Anyway, the first couple of times I put it on in the car, it just sounded like incoherent noise. It sounded like a death metal band falling down 80 flights of stairs. Just crazy noise and screaming. Then one day I was on a longer drive and stuck it in the CD player again. After listening through the album about 3 or 4 times, I was finally kinda trained into it and could anticipate where the songs were going, which finally made it listenable... somewhat, lol.
