New MB/CPU/Ram Now win7 won't boot!
« on: July 10, 2011, 09:21:13 PM »
Just went and picked up:

ASUS P8-Z68-V Pro MB
Intel i5-2500K CPU
8GB Corsair vengance DDR3 RAM

Now I just installed it, moved my Vid card and  my HDD (Seagate Barracuda 1TB) to the new system and windows BSODs just after the "Windows is loading" screen. Thing is, the system reboots immediately after the BSOD and leaves me no chance to see the error.

After rebooting a w7 startup repair tool tries to automatically repair but fails. It leaves me with options to restore to a prev snapshot or other advanced options. There is a viewer of the fail log and the ability to get to a command prompt.

I don't know what the hell happened. I can see everything (files and such) in the command prompt and if I view the EULA of the error reporter I can get use of a file browser and everything seems to be there.

HELP!!!

one, you can turn off booting on a stop error (bsod) :) its just a check box somewhere in the control panel... but if you cant boot that doesnt help a whole lot...

are you sure none of the parts are fried? or that your power supply is big enough?

Figured it out. Was using a SATA 6GB/S Slot when my HDD is only 3GB/S heh.

So I can now log in and stuff but since my old rig used IDE for my optical I don't have a way to load the new chipset and network adapter drivers.

I may be able to grab the installer on my Blackberry and connect it to the new rig. Hopefully I can take it from the BB and onto the HDD and then update from there!

IM GOING IN!!!!!

really now?

if that actually caused a problem (which it honestly shouldnt :() then you might want to consider re-installing right away cause if there WAS an issue with the different rates, you might have write errors on the disk which is NOT GOOD AT ALL

Lol i can't believe this is how I'm doing this...

Using my ps3 to do the drivers (too large of a file for my bb or iPod) and using my bbs sd card via USB in storage mode as an in between to my pc. Eta for slow USB transfer dl ... 80mins.

Good grief what a kludge!

Thanks for the heads up on the disk errors Vae, going to run some scans on it right now.

sfc /scannow

Turns out that's what the system was automatically doing when it couldn't startup windows.

System is smooooooth now. The MoBo I got has 3x pci-e slots so I think in the future I'll save for another gtx570 and pickup a SSD when the prices have dropped and look into grabbing another 8 gigs of ram to fill it out.

Will also be looking to get a better tower in the next little bit.

ssd prices arent TOO bad right now... its about 2 dollars a gig :) if you are willing to drop 200$ you can get a pretty nice one with a decent size for your OS and most of your programs, and leave some large platter drives for file storage

Welcome to the world of Sandybridge!!! I couldn't be happier with my setup. Once you get everything running good then the fun of overclocking begins :) I have mine running prime stable at 4.6ghz right now with my 2600K. You should easily be able to hit 4+ on stock cooling even with the 2500K. If your Asus MB is anything like mine it should have an auto-overclock feature that will allow it to overclock its self to over 4 without a problem. Just go back and double check the voltages it applies to the CPU, if your happy there then you can leave it or go further.

As far as the issue you had with install, from what I gather is you just moved the hard drive over without a fresh install and that very well could have caused the problem with the different SATA port speeds. I have seen hard drive moves like that cause a wide range of problems. Anytime I swap motherboards I do a clean install. As Vae said there should be no problem running a sata2 drive in a sata3 port.

Last time I overclocked anything I think it was when I hit the turbo button on the old 386 to get Duke3D to run an acceptable framerate. :D

eventually the OS needs to talk to the storage controller, and the instructions can't just execute from the beginning of the disk without eventually accessing the storage system.  that's why the storage configuration needs to match the storage hardware.  in other words the controllers configuration has to match when moving a hard drive between systems.  for example raid x to raid y

I'm going to have to look up this RAID thing. Can someone give me a quick summary of it's benefit?

raid is just discs working together as a single disc... you can do things like a hardware raid which requires a raid controller (built into most new motherboards) or you can do a software raid from within your OS

raid has different levels, the most common being 0, 1, 1+0, and 5

raid 0 is a striped volume requiring at least 2 hard drives, it boosts speed theoretically doubling your read and write capabilities (not quite double in practical use though) because it writes data striped over both drives, a here b there c here d there sorta thing... however if you lose one disc, all the information on both discs is totally gone

raid 1 is a mirror, usually used for redundant backup, disc 1 just mirrors over to disc 2, if one disc goes down, just throw another in and it will redo the mirror and so essentially your data is totally safe... but its a little slower as you are writing twice as much

that is where raid 1+0 comes in, requiring at least 4 discs, its a striped raid that is mirrored, first two discs are striped, second two discs are a mirror of those striped discs :) its cool but not the best option and raid 5 is why

raid 5 requires at least 3 discs, you get about 2/3 of the space (of all the discs combined) and essentially its a parody raid where if one drive goes down, you pop a new one in and the other drives will recreate what was on it :) its fast and reliable

there is no reason to really run raid unless you want to say you are running raid... but the option is there most of the time

EDIT: forgot to add, raid 0 gives full disc space of both discs, raid 1 gives disc space of one disc :)
