Tastyspleen Hosting Demos?
« on: January 12, 2006, 02:41:55 PM »
Hey hey

Just curious if it would be possible to host demos on tastyspleen? Like it used to be on q2players was up and active, or how it is at www.challenge-tv.com right now. Where people can upload demos and make them available for everyone to download. I've always found demos to be an integral part of the q2 community, new players can watch and learn, others can enjoy a good game, and reading comments on demos can be entertainment on it's own.

This is of course if there is any intrest, if noone intends uploading or watching and commenting it is no reason to put effort into it. But since q2players seems to be down for good or quite some time, I'd just thought I'd suggest it ;)

I'd be totally into it.

We have the hard drive space, and enough bandwidth to cover it, I think.

If there's some simple "file upload" web script (PHP or whatever) out there, I could give it a shot.  I don't have enough time to code it myself at the moment, though I'd like to.

I've got about 10Gb of Q2 demos(~19,000 demos); got space for that?

DEMOn is the FPS demo king.

Just curious if it would be possible to host demos on tastyspleen?

This is an excellent idea.

Here is a wish list:
  • when posting: who posted, preferably tied to forum profiles
  • when posting: date posted
  • when posting: list of players
  • when posting: map
  • when posting: comment
  • when posting: event (meaning it it from TastyTourney4, QuakeCon,..)
  • when posting: optional stuff: gametype, score, pov
  • after posted: ability to comment on demo (most important)
  • after posted: sortable by popularity in number of downloads
  • after posted: sortable by popularity in number of posts
  • after posted: sortable by most recent comments
  • after posted: searchable in posted fields
  • after posted: optional stuff: searchable in all fields, demo size which implies length
  • after posted: ability to direct-link to demo download

Also, this could be the same tool used for tournaments.. so a field for that would be neat.  Though two players might play each other several times in and out of the tourney, so it might get confusing without including a match number or tieing it to the match results.

Thinking about coding this wish list is a big job.  Just some demo upload tool with none of this would be good too.

Yeah, I remember when he gave me "some demos":  a hard drive full of game demos, and game movies.  He should have asked, "Got a spare week to watch more demo content than you knew was out there?"  Good stuff.

There are a bunch of great Q2 game movies (as in *.avi files) out there.

Tastyspleen at this time cannot physically host 10GB worth of demo's, the max we can host of ANYTYPE of files is 5GB.  Though, I'm sure we can put up quite a few, so maybe cut the fat off that file load?  or you can signup for those free internet hard drives, and I'll link them through tastyspleen.  just an idea.  I do like the idea of an archive of demo's.  Of course, someone will have to name them and have a description for them aswell.

(if possible)
Players #
Map Name
Player Names
(and anything else you can think of, all would be helpful if someone were to search for a specific demo content)

i dunno i think if you guys want to host or share demos you should do that amongst yourself :)
there are alot of free hosting services and most of you guys are on broadband. DCC amongst yourselfes in irc :)

having an area where everyone can upload files to can be a good thing but could also be a bad thing

inivting malicious code from players thta have ill feelings towards ts/admins  or having mp3s dumped out there that ts does not need to be associated as being the place to get that newest ripped album...yadda yadda
plus the extra load it might put on the services

just my 2cents

I am personally all for the idea, like an "add-on" for the cool frag clips, except these demos can just be amazingly cool or well played, or informative and constructive etc, as regards to the latest ripped album thingy, the demos im sure would be watched by someone, (maybe even checked by admins) to make sure theyre all ok, then added.

Think defiant's list of things to add is quite nice (ordering demos by the most recent comment is something I've always missed on q2players and q2scene.), so if something like that is done nothing would be better.

Most important:
- players/teams
- type (1v1/2v2/3v3/rails/ctf/ra2/dm/trick/clip/whatever)
- map (maybe a clickable link directly to the map in the download section ;) )
- pov

- download counter
- decent name on the zip/demo file! I always hated how q2players named the demos 382739472.zip ;(
- number of comments

I know it probably takes some effort getting it going, and I don't have knowledge to help, so all I can do is bitch and moan about details and stuff that I want to have. Another thing is of course that it's not really needed just for the demos, as challenge-tv offers unlimited amount of demos to be uploaded by anyone without even signing on or anything, or at least as many as you ever feel like uploading. I just thought it would be much more fun having the demos here in an active community, so people can comment and discuss them within the community. On chtv max two people will comment on them per year ;)

On q2players it was required to upload demos in .dm2 format, the good thing was that this prevented other files from being uploaded in the demosection. The bad thing was that you couldn't add multiple demos in one upload (for instance a 3 mapper in a duel league). Q2scene and ch-tv allows only zipped files to be uploaded. The good/bad thing about q2scene is the demo approval. The good part is of course total control of demos added, and avoiding spam of bad bad demos, but I always found it best when people could upload any demo they wanted without someone sitting on a high horse deciding whether it was watchable. If the demo is broken or not a demo at all, the admins can just delete it as soon as it is discovered. Of course q2scene has a much larger userbase than q2players had, so I guess it was needed to avoid too many uploads and demos on their somewhat limited and crappy server.

Q2scene also has the rating of demos, which I don't neccessarily always think is a good thing. It's much more enjoyable to read what people think instead of seeing just the rate. It seems to make people just type "gg ****1/2" and that's pretty boring to read. Besides the rating seems to be way to random and people tend to rate either way too high or way too low. On the good side is of course the possibility to sort by rating.

Anyway, not expecting anything, just wishfull thinking. If anyone does so, I'll try my best to do my share of commenting and uploading demos.

the demo's are being hosted on a seperate section of this forum, and you can search by player name, game type, comment, and you could rate demo's by using a poll, have a download counter, and more.

As for the decent name on demo files, that will have to be upto whoever uploads the demo's.

the forums are the quickest and easiest way to get everything up and running for the demo's.  so there you guys go, you have everything you specified.
