Quake 2 Server help

Hello everyone! It's pretty cool that an old quake community is still around...I will admit I was shocked anyone still played quake 2 these days lol. Anyway, I bought a server for Quake 2 because I love the game still to this day and nobody hosts the mode and style of gameplay I liked, but I need helping setting it up. I am trying to setup the game to use Rocket Arena 2 with the bigones map...railgun only and grapple hook. That's the old school style that I played many many years ago so I was wondering if anyone can guide me through this process a bit?

I have this in my command line:

The ip is a real IP address but I starred it out because I am not trying to advertise here or anything.

My server config looks like this:

That looks like a good start. I'm not sure what the "RUN" is all about in the command line but if your server executable is "quake2" that's what it should be.
Is the server not starting or is it posting error messages?  Once you get the old quake2 engine going, I'd advise downloading and installing the r1q2 open source server since it has several bug fixes and security fixes in it, but get the plain-jane version going first just to keep it simple. I don't know if Arena needed the +set deathmatch 1 in the command line or not. I think as long as it's in the config it should be OK.

Once it's running you should have no problems connecting to it locally but the real fun begins when you try to publish the IP and get your friends on it. You have to open the port on your router firewall and set the router to forward external port 27910 to your 27910 on your internal server, this requires knowledge of your brand and version of the router.

Thanks for the reply....I have the server hosted with a gameserver company. They keep forwarding me around trying to get someone that knows something about quake 2....I am guessing its not a popular choice these days (ha!). The RUN command was already there with the initial install they did. I am about to try a few things then I will post a picture of what it does when I try to connect if it doesn't work....or I will let you know that it works. Thanks again for the response...I really appreciate it.

Did you look at the r1q2 server setup guide?  Do you have access to SSH, and if not what if you request it (through a jail or something like that)?

WSAECONNRESET means the server port was open for connection (not firewalled) but no server was listening on the port. Either the server didn't start or it didn't open the correct port. By default it should have been 27910. You might try adding +set port 27910 after the +set ip x.x.x.x command just to be sure.

If you don't have SSH access for the server then look for the server log via your FTP access to your server account.

Thanks for the replies. I gave up on the server and cancelled my account with the company because they just couldn't provide the needed support. Plus I just had to come to terms with the fact that not enough people would play often enough to make it worthwhile. I will forever miss the q2 days, but I did have some fun in a few tasty servers today. I just wish DNF was moddable because that could be a sweet way to have some old school fun. Anyway, I appreciate all the helpou guys gave :-)

Note, we do have an "ra2-railz" server, but it hasn't seen much action lately.

I'm open to tweaking the config, if it's different from what you were looking for.

Break out the secret decoder ring and find out the difference between dmflags = 16404 and 1558, the rest is just map lists or rotation. TS is the Q2 system with the most traffic so if you want a taste of the good old days of Q2 disbedaplaz. :)

I just really really really enjoyed playing the bigones map that can be seen at 0:45 secs in this video
