it can be extra fun when i think of some goofy alias and it works out to exactly the 15 character max.  like "Mr. Robert Dutu" or "reinced priebus", etc.

1 ) To avoid talking to people you know.
2 ) Reputation: - To be a bigger fuckwit than usual without hurting your reputation.
                     - To keep your identity secret if you lose.
3 ) For fun.

I haven't played in a month or so, but I alias sometimes when people are around who will stalk/spectate/talk shit to me(due to me being decent at this game / having demos to back this up + some passionate opinions on these forums) or just around people who typically are dying to prove themselves against me when I couldn't care less / am drunk as hell. In my time playing q2, the more serious I was about it, I was way less skilled.. now I'm to the point where q2 provides occasional fun, which includes good competition.

I'm not blaming the "victim" here; I'm just pointing out some highly conspicuous circumstances that are almost unique to haunt's "case." He's got some strong, POSTED opinions; he's got some impressive, POSTED demos and clips and maybe above all, he's got tons of..yea you guessed it POSTED condump-backed accusations/defense. Something to consider.

I'm an easy target to flaming, lol. So sometimes I feel like aliasing and ignoring people is better than the alternative, especially since I am an admin of several servers. I probably alias half the time, when I actually play.

All good reasons, I just never really alias'ed much.

The main benefits I've noticed, esp in tdm/duel:

1) Your losses mean less because you're a "nobody". Also, it might look bad that a random player just trashed a known player.
2) Can talk shit with less repercussions since you have no "identity".
3) Have a gameplay advantage because the aliased player knows how his opponent might play, but his opponent doesn't.
