Mplayer veterans, heads up!
« on: May 17, 2011, 05:29:03 AM »
I'm one of those who started out in the Mplayer community, and ever since it died I've been missing it in a way. I know for a fact that I'm not the only one. Who else?

I've managed to keep in touch with a few of the old Mplayer people, but I find it more and more difficult for each year that passes. So I decided to create a Facebook group (not very original, but hopefully somewhat effective) for us Mplayer Q2 veterans. Please, feel free to join if you're one of us. :)

Mplayer Quake2 Veterans Group: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_209653049065806

Ultimately and naturally I hope to be able to bring back a few people to the game (if only for a moment or two), but what are the chances to succeed? :/

I don't know how to describe it correctly in the right terms and all that, but it's a gaming community (platform?) that was up and running between ~1997-2001. Q2 was one of many games that was featured. It was equivalent to Heat and Zone.

You'd probably be better off reading this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mplayer.com

I think I remember playing a very little bit of Half-Life and CS on mplayer.com. It's hard to remember back then (2000), but playing both games on WON was a much more enjoyable experience.

I was on Mplayer from probably 98 until it went tits up in 01. Actually, I started there just as a way to voice and video chat with friends on the west coast. Then we eventually made it our nightly hangout in the poker lobbies. Ah yes, and then they began the "adult" video chat rooms. At first they were only available to those with paid subscriptions, but eventually they opened it to everyone and expanded it. Those were fun. We'd all room-hop trying to find some perv doing something unspeakable. A couple of times we saw people doing 2girl1guy exhibition fucks, sometimes chicks doing solo strip shows on webcam for people. Those were the good ole days before EVERYONE was whipping their dick out on camera like chat roulette. Anyway, Q2 was mainly just a momentary diversion. Most of what I played there was poker, backgammon, and chess.

It's fun to reminisce about those days, a lot of the folks I was really close friends with on there have either passed away or been incarcerated for an extended period. But I still don't see much of a point in trying to hook up with other Mplayer users, I really never wasted my time getting to know anyone at all other than my small group of demented crazy friends. Not to mention I don't and WON'T have Facebook any time soon. First, I don't like the idea of voluntarily offering so much information about myself all in one place. Second, it's just one more thing to consume my time needlessly. Nah man, that's what THIS messageboard is for.

WON, what's that?

World Opponent Network.  It was Valve's old master server query system before they switched to Steam. The nice thing about WON was ran in-game, so you didn't to run a third-party application to find servers.

Apparently the idea of WON is still popular: http://v5.steamlessproject.nl/index.php?page=won2

I guess there was never a patch or anything for Q2, to install support for WON?

Nah, WON was only for Half-Life and its mods, and games like Homefront from Sierra Games.

I never actually looked at the server browser in Q2 till now and no surprise people needed gamespy and mplayer. This browser is terrible!
