lol. It's horribly written. i WISH the answer was two, but it's not. it's 288.. typically I would read this as "48 divided by the product of 2 and (9+3)." However, after you do the parentheses the problem turns into 48 / 2 * 12, and division comes first in the order of operations. it's a silly troll(basic math problem that's improperly formed to trick), thought I'd share it with everyone.

It was probably silly little things like this that kept me from getting a perfect score on my math SAT in high school.

The answer is definitely 288. I'm not sure there is any standard that would treat it otherwise.

Multiplication and division are done on the same step and always follow left to right. The operations inside the parenthesis are done first but the operation outside the parenthesis which uses the parenthesis themselves to denote multiplication, never get done before the division.

Basic algebra.

P.S. Multiplication and Division are logically the same, just as with addition and subtraction. On one side subtraction is actually adding a negative and therefore the same operation, the same is true because division is really just multiplying by a reciprocal. 10 / 2 is the same as 10 * (1 / 2). Same operation.

This analogy only goes far. By definition they are different operations used for different needs, but mathematically they are treated the same.
