Increasing your FOV setting slightly often smooths out choppy and overly-twitchy aiming. I personally use a setting of "110" (default is "90"). It may make everything look a bit wall-eyed for a while, but if you stick with it and get used to it, you really won't notice it anymore.

higher fov generally makes aiming HARDER not easier... it smooths things out yes, but in the end, things farther away seem much smaller...

i use 110, but i run a 16:10 widescreen, so its really quite like a 100 on a 4:3

Higher FOV almost always improves hitscan accuracy, I rail probably 30-40% better just from going up from 100 to 110.   I have a huge flat screen downstairs I sometimes play games on, jack the fov up to as high as 130.  Makes movement alot easier also.

My fov is 110, fwiw.  I asked for help with settings as a new player to Q2, and was told to set a bunch of things a certain way, including a fov of 110, so I did that and haven't really tried anything else.  The default of 90 seems really zoomed in now after getting used to 110.  I have heard of some using as high as 135 or so.

Re: Aiming better.  First and foremost, you do use a mouse to aim, and keyboard for movements, right?  What kind of mouse do you have?  There are programs that can increase the USB polling rate (how many times/second the USB interface checks for new input, or something like that) and that can make your mouse movements smoother.  A good mouse and mouse pad/surface can help a lot.  Fine-tuning your in-game sensitivity setting can help.  Trying to be really smooth with your mouse movements helps, but that takes a long time to dial in.

Once you've modified your settings to your liking, the only thing that helps from that point on is practice, practice, and more practice =)  I've been playing this game off/on for 12 years now, and to this day I'm still constantly improving with aim, movement, etc.

These aren't always a wise decision. I once tried using one of these programs to adjust the polling rate and it screwed with my operating systems configuration to where it would no longer boot. I tried everything possible to recover the old settings but no luck. I eventually had to format and reinstall the OS on that partition, and luckily it was already a pretty fresh install when it happened, so I didn't lose any data I didn't already have backed up on CD.

It should also DEFINITELY be mentioned that pushing the polling rate past the normal setting can potentially damage hardware beyond repair. Think of it like a car motor. You can tweak the carburetor to allow more air and fuel to be injected to make it go faster than it's rated for, and it might keep going very fast for a while,... but if you run it that hot long enough, eventually valves will burn up, seals will blow, and vital engine parts will be forever destroyed. If you use one of these programs, proceed with caution.

Just reporting personal experience.  I've used them ever since I first heard of them (probably 8 years or so, not sure), on multiple motherboards/usb ports, and on multiple devices, and I've never had an issue with them.  Is it possible the program you tried was a virus or had a trojan?  I think more people have good experiences with them than bad, at least from what I've read regarding them.

I've never heard of anybody having any issues using up to 500Hz, which is what I have always used.  I have heard of people having issues using 1000Hz, so I guess it might be wise to avoid that.  500 seems fine anyway.  There is definitely a VERY noticeable difference (to me anyway) of how much more smoothly 500Hz is compared to the default of 125Hz.

Edit: Also, the car motor comparison doesn't quite work as there are no moving parts integral to anything directly USB-related.  I'm pretty sure one of the reasons the default polling rate on computers is still only 125Hz is for backwards compatibility to some really old USB1 devices.  USB3 is out now, and I imagine just about any motherboard, and probably just about all peripherals too, that have come out since USB2 came out can handle a 500Hz polling rate.

I changed from 90 to 100 tonight.  I did not see a big difference in my play, but I'm gonna leave it at 100 for a while and see.

Maybe after getting used to 100, i'll up it to 110.

FOV is all about perception.

Aiming does not improve or reduce because of FOV. FOV is only passed to the renderer for perspective rendering; I have never seen an engine that adjusts sensitivity based on FOV. Aiming 10 units to the right will always be 10 units to the right regardless of your FOV, the only difference is how your eyes are perceiving the data that's being given to you. If your aiming does get worse or improve, it's just because you have an easier time adjusting to that FOV than the other one. I've played with a fov of 90 for like 9 years, and there's no way I'm going to change it. I'm used to it, and that's just the way it is. Changing my FOV to 110 won't make my aiming or movement any better, it will just mess up the way I know how to play.

Screen size is another misconception. FOVs will appear the same across all resolutions, the only difference is you'll lose screen on the opposite side of the border of the aspect ratio (hence why the bottom of the weapon would be cut off). When moving from 4:3 at FOV 90, to receive the exact same view as you did before on the top, you'd have to push up to a FOV of 110. However this will result in skewing on the sides and make you appear to run faster than you actually are (again, perception; ask a 110 or higher player to go down to 90 and they'll feel like they are moving incredibly slow).

Honestly, in the end, FOV doesn't matter. It's all about what you're used to play to. It may seem that you're getting better on a certain FOV, but many factors could be involved; luck, enemy skill, or previous games you've played also being played at the same FOV as that.

With perspective rendering it's really hard to make it look good for everybody. 90 tends to be the norm for games because it looks the best with minimal visual skewing and artifacts.

An example I can think of off the top of my head is Halo 3. Halo uses an extremely close FOV (probably about 75 or 80). It takes a little while to get used to when you first play it, eventually you get used to it. Then you try playing Quake again, and you wonder why newer games have slowed down considerably!

the reason i say a higher fov is harder to aim with is because things get smaller faster the farther out they go... look across the map with a 90 fov, then do it with a 110 fov... it looks like a much greater distance and so when you are trying to aim it has to be more precise to hit a smaller target on your screen

essentially it doesnt make your aim better or worse, a lower fov just hides bad aim better... the same as sensitivity, a higher sens is no different than a low sens, but theoretically a lower sens hides bad aim better (appearing to improve your aim) because your actual movements dont have to be as precise

it really does boil down to what you are used to, you can get used to playing with anything really and your best bet is to just pick an fov and sens and stick with it for awhile... but a lower fov and lower sens do hide bad aim better

also paril i disagree with your views on different aspect ratios relating to fov... but i dont feel like arguing with you right now about it :)

higher FOV lets you see more things on the side of your head.  If you can comprehend it, you can see almost sideways.  Then you can see that 90 FOV player before they see you.  :)

I still use 90 (maybe 100 too).
