every now and then when i start a game my man will run. if i hit back he stops. if i let go, do nothing on the keys he runs! but wait... its not sticky keys because rebooting corrects it every time, but that just takes to long when the will to frag is upon me.
any ideas. oh, once i got off the game, stayed online, then went back to it, and it was fine. but many other times i had to reboot AND, since i am a phone man that means resigning onto the internet as well

I believe I'd had this happen a few times as well.
The solution, best as I remember, was to make sure you're not hitting any keys when you first start up quake. If you do happen to do that, don't bother with quitting quake and reopening it, do this:
if you're moving forwards, type this on the console:
-forward
if you're moving backwards:
-back
and so on..
Now, if you're experiencing this and are absolutely sure you're not hitting any keys, it'd now be a good idea to check your config file(s) for any stray movement commands that could be setting you up for movement from the start.
And finally, if after all of that, you still have the problem, I'd then check for spyware/malware and viruses. For this kind of thing, you have Spybot, Ad-Aware, and then for virus scans, you can simply Google for "online virus scan" and you'll come across Symantec and Panda Software, just to name a few.

I had that problem for some reason back on 56k. All I had to do was hit the direction I kept running in and it would stop after I let go. So, if I was running forward by itself, I would just hit up and let go and it would stop and be back to normal.
Edit - And of course I tell you this after over a month of you putting it up... OH I'm good!

I have something similar to this happen to me during the middle of the game periodically, but not at startup. Forward, back, left strafe, right strafe, and jump have all stuck at one time or another.
Don't know what causes it, possibly the keyboard, but corrective action is what Coz says .... just hit the key that seems to be "sticking" and it quits. I'll try another KB someday.
Probably not the same as Maxs' problem.

I have this problem as well, but only on xquake, I seem to get stuck moving one direction, then boom it stops. I think its lag related but i'm not sure.

My parents computer does that... It's a completely different problem most likely. It gets "stuck" going in one direction for a while and the computer stops taking commands. It started after 4 clients were on and was extremely worse the higher the clients got. (And on xquake, that's always high) I fixed it by changing graphics to software. Apparently it had to do with the shared video memory. The ram was getting overloaded or something like that and just freezing the comp for a second or two and I just froze going in one direction. Whatever direction I was facing and walking. It was weird... I know a sure fire fix for it... Getting an actual graphics card for it.

This also happens to me every now and then. But under Linux, so it doesn't look like something OS specific. It rather appears to be related to using nocheat... Are you using nocheat when this annoying behaviour sets in?
As far as I remember, it never happened when using icculus quake2, but it happens once a week or so when using nocheat.
