New monitor causing choppy game play, help requested. r1q2 user.
« on: December 26, 2005, 04:18:16 PM »
i got a new monitor for christmas.  My last monitor was a huge old 17 incher.  It worked fine, but was the size of a vw bug.  My r1q2 ran perfectly smooth on it.  For christmas i recieved a 19" LCD flat screen monitor.  Acer brand, model AL1914.  Now it is very choppy, to the point of being unplayable.  Its choppy enough i have trouble moving and aiming, especially with rail.

Lemonzest suggested i post my config, so here it is:

// generated by quake, do not modify

bind ENTER "invuse"
bind ESCAPE "togglemenu"

what about your refresh rate of your screen?  I don't know what the choppyness looks like, but it would more than likely be coming from your videocard rather than your monitor.  Maybe try changing screen sizes, or even seeing if there is a better driver.  Thats about all I can think of.  except maybe to see if it does it with other clients too, or other games.

plus with most 19" LCD's the native resolution is 1280x1024 so your graphics card might not have enough fillrate (oomph)  for a smooth game at that resolution. you can try running lower but the picture WILL be bad, have blur and lag (image processing in the LCD's display processor)

Try setting your cl_maxfps to 60.  To the best of my knowledge LCD's don't go higher than 60Hz.

you can try running lower but the picture WILL be bad, have blur and lag (image processing in the LCD's display processor)

Really?  I must be lucky, I got a cheap Polyview 17" LCD and don't experience that o_O

I've had this problem.  I read that XP has some refresh rate lock or something that Q2 can't override.  These guys were discussing fixes before the quakecon tournament.  I downloaded the program, set my monitor res to 1024 and refresh rate to 75 and I haven't had a problem since.

What i mean is that some LCD's have Poor Resolution Scaling and can lead to problems, best to always run in the Native Screen resolution. :)

Its probably a long way off, but if you have an ATI card, try setting the gl_point_parameters to 0 instead of 1 ... I think i read a problem like that and that fixed it..

I believe that program is intended for CRT's only, LCD's operate differently.  Plus he didn't change anything but the monitor.

Anyway I did some research and saw that it could be vsync giving you the problems Gator, try turning that off.

If it is your video card (not enough 'ommpfh'   :frustration:) and you dont like how bad it looks with lower resolutions... (Trust me, it looks real bad)  :-X
Go to your video settings and find "Digital flat panel settings" (with Nvidia) and select centered output, It makes the image smaller, but it won't look like trash.

just cuz its new, dont mean its better :)
we are now entering a new computer age, one that is totaly anti-gaming

the lcd with its crappy resolution and refresh rate
our wireless networking that lags us to death
and our wireless keyboards and mice that require batterys and wear out only after a few days of play

old crt monitors are almost totaly phased out, i highly suggest you get um while you still can

I agree, alot of these newer products are even easier and cheaper to make than the older ones, yet they still cost ALOT more.  The wireless pc items that require batteries need a new approach at their power sources.  The easiest and best, would be solar cells in the keyboard for daytime use, and optional battery for night time use.  Also, the cell could be used to charge the battery up when they are not in use.  As a matter of fact, batteries should be obselete now, or atleast something better should be out now.  And as for the wireless mouse..lol..maybe solar cells won't work well, because they could be blocked (unless placed on the body of the mouse, but not where you hold it, more like a flat panel protruding out of the front, with style in mind of course.)
or maybe a mouse like that one flashlight you shake for 15 minutes of light.  Appliances really need to start taking advantage of solar power.  Even if it is not enough to power the whole device, it could help take some load off of your electric bill.  Light is the most powerful and wasted natural resource on this planet.   Enough light falls on this planet each day to power everything and anything we have indefinately.

I don't see wireless mouse and keyboard as a step backwards.  I use only nickel cadium 2500mha battorys and they work for around a month, even in my battory hog digital camera.  Then when charging needs to happen there ready to rock in 15 short min (a few hrs on my old charger, still use it if I can, not sure what fast charge does to the battorys).  Got a wireless mouse for christmas, use it every day for hrs on end, it runs on a single AA battory and still have yet to charge it or see a single glitch/problem and its comein up on the end of January.  Just my off topic thoughts.

Guess its Nickel Metal Hydride, not cadium and its mAh not mha.  Energizer to be spacific.  15min charger comes with four 2200mha battorys but I got two 2500mha when I bought the slow charger.
