I'm surprised that you can overlay html on flash!

Flash has historically made it's drawing rectangle immovable, immutable, un-hidable, and drawn at a very inconvenient time. Silverlight was supposed to be the more flexible alternative when it came to those needs.

Yeah. I feel sorry for anyone still getting online by way of 56k dialup. Tastyspleen was THE last page on the entire internet that would load in a decent amount of time on 56k.... was.

I just tried it with NoScript on FireFox, which prevents the flash object from initializing at all, and the page still loads fine. The background is blank, but the main page links are all there.

I don't have a dialup connection to try it with--but in theory, the main page links should still load quickly on a slow connection. The background movie would of course be slower to load, but it shouldn't impair the functionality of the page.

That flash object is ~550k. That's not TO much for a 56k'er.

People's avatars here have been in the 1mb+ size, along with people's sig's.

Meh, the gif is better quality and smoother than the flash. I know the gif used to be on the main page some time ago.

It's displayed underneath the HTML, so the worst that should happen is the video would be blank.

But anyway, data like the bar chart on page 24 of this pdf http://laws.qualys.com/SPO1-204_Kandek.pdf suggests that flash is installed on nearly 100% of browsers these days (apple iOS products aside.)
