As an American and as the grandson of one American man who saw combat in the Pacific theater of World War II, I'd like to say without hesitation:

Fuck Japan.

Cry me a river. Maybe after you do it for 10,000 years, it'll equate to amount of blood spilled in such a pointless war.

The end justifying the means in relation to the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima is not exactly a valid argument. Japan was the aggressor. They fucked with a sleeping giant, woke him up, and got stepped on. Shit happens. By your own admission, primal instincts (such as self preservation) always trump moral rationale.

both of my grandfathers are WWII vets. they are both dead. well, all of my grandparents are dead.

but the japanese special police force sword(numbered.. only 2,000 of these made[however a later edition made a few more thousand of them]) that he acquired still remains. It's great to break it out at parties and start swinging it around.

My grandfather on my mother's side was in the Army during WWII and was in the Philippines and Okinawa for sure, I don't know if he ever stepped foot on Peleliu though. My grandfather on my father's side was in the Navy during WWII and Korea. When he finally left the service, he pretty much dropped everything and ran back home like his hair was on fire. He didn't even bring his uniform home. All I really have to prove that he was ever in France or Korea is a few pictures, a metal 50cal ammo box he used as a tool box, a few rifles he bought at the end of WWII from an Army guy, and a couple of patches they gave him, one of which I now proudly wear on my m/c vest. My moms dad kept a little more of his stuff though. I have his complete Army dress uniform, his Army issued footlocker (in bad shape, I have my guitar amp rack sitting on it right now), his camp shovel, his Army issued knife (which I bet was probably used to send a couple of nips to the great hereafter considering where he was), and a few other things. I think I've mentioned it before, but my favorite piece is a handcarved wooden club that my grandfather got off of a dead jap one night. Really the only story I know about my grandfathers experiences in the pacific because its the only one he'd cough up. He used to have this club hanging on the wall of his dining room on this god-awful looking decorative macrame thing and I asked him where it came from. He told me that he got up in the middle of the night to take a shit and literally ran into a jap in the dark. He didn't have a gun or his knife so he just screamed and ran away, and the jap was scared shitless and ran the other direction. His unit got up and took off after him and killed him. The jap was either scouting or sneaking into the camp to kill people in their sleep. The club already had blood stains on it, so it was reasonable to assume he was gonna headcrack a few US grunts and disappear again. It still has some faint bloodstains, although my grandfather fucking laquered the god damn thing at some point. I keep meaning to get a few pics of it but never remember to do it.

They fucked with a sleeping giant, woke him up, and got stepped on. Shit happens. By your own admission, primal instincts (such as self preservation) always trump moral rationale.

killing of civilians is never acceptable, not even in war.  we didn't know what we had when we used it.  no person will ever be able to convince me that there was no alternative to using the bombs on two major japanese cities, because, as i said, we had no idea what we had in our possession.  it had never been used in combat before, and especially not to the levels we used them at.

they are still witnessing the horrors.  genetic mutations and cancers that have been markedly higher.  there was no foresight to this because this was the precedent.  and it's why we will never do it again.  remember that.  the japanese may have initiated with us, but they targeted pearl harbor.  we targetted two cities.

this is off-topic.

Killing people who are not involved i combat with you is the same as killing civilians IMO.  The japs killed people who were had done nothing to them.
Like Foc said, once they did that it was ON.

There's a lot to be said about this, but I am kind of drunk. All I have to say is that even though we didn't foresee all of the dangers of nuclear weapons, which could have influenced the decision to drop those bombs significantly, I still think that Truman made the right decision.
