ah pings, some would consider this a decisive point of life vs. death in q2 online gaming. it all starts with a person with a 60 ping fragged by a person with a 30 ping complains, yelling bs, blaming the frag all on your ping. Sure, the ping is 30ms faster, but bear in mind, how fast does it really take to click that button? All this means is you have to be 30ms faster than the other person when you do fire. And lets not forget everyone doesn't get a hit the first time everytime. Will the complaining stop if everyone had a 0 ping? what next? will everyone have to have the same pc specs? and then after all that evening out, and everything is truly equal, what next? some people have better pings, because they are either closer to the server, or have a better isp, OR their system is not configured optimally. simply put, after all of the differences are made the same, it comes right down to if you have skill or not. You bastards have only 2 choices, of which i recommend both, get a faster isp, and get some skill. watch how people play, and learn, not discourage. otherwise, i suggest not playing multiplayer of any game entirely.
Now with that being said, I leave it to those whom probably don't like me because im misunderstood, so FLAME AWAY LAMERS!!

I play better when I have lower ping. Most all weapons behave more appropriately. Easier to keep chain on a target that is quickly changing directions, hyperblaster is a LOT easier to use, it's easier to dodge rockets, etc. Most anything under 50 is quite good IMO.

yeah, it can suck a bit, usually pings 200 and under are ok to play with, but you won't be in the top 5, unless there is only 5 players. Though, I have seen some people with 150+ pings win a few games with vengeance.

It is whatever you are used to more then anything else. i can get my spleen handed to me on a plate by plenty of near 200 pingers.
i dont play that well at 200, but anything around 150 or less i am fine with, although since i usually ping around 45, it takes a map or so to get used to it. But once i do get used to it, i dont have any problems or complaints. i especially like a smooth server more then a low pinging one. When i consider the quality of a server, i look at how smooth it is running, not a numbered ping. There are lots of 130 servers i'd rather play on then 70 ms ones.
Ping is more of an excuse then anything else. Look at what haunted and daelmun do with thiers.(200)

I played for a long time on 56k...so you won't see me complain now if I have anything under 130 ping. And the difference between 30 and 60 ping is not big enough to whine about it. But then again...I've learned over the years that whining is an integral part of playing online in public servers.

It is no crime to have a great connection, even back with true HBPs (modem/location) vs LPBs (cable/dsl/LAN). Having a worse connection, just means there are more obticles that mean more of a victory if you win. I certainly notice if there is a player with 120+ ping who is performing well. I know the deal, having played over a 14.4 PPP.
This was a bigger deal when there were true HBPs (modem) vs LPBs (cable/dsl/LAN). Also, loss is a bigger deal than latency, because firing or jumps don't register. If the connection is choppy, it is hard to get immersed in the game.
In the future, given increasing bandwidth, I wouldn't be surprised to see FPS branch out to be fully web served.. not just javascript/ajax but full frame video back from the server. Why? Because game companies can then own the content and charge by the minute. Not what I'm looking for, but I'd bet it is coming soon.

It is true that connection latency is not a crime, nor a cheat. But I can understand why people get frustrated, because I was stuck with dialup for 4 years where I lived, so I didn't bother playing quake much online. I remember I couldn't ever win a game with my 300ping, and before I could fire I was fragged, or fragged out of nowhere. The only other connection I had available to me was DirecTV Sat, and it is EXPENSIVE. cable owns over any other connection, it's cheaper, faster, and more reliable. as for the fps conspiracy theory, I don't know if that will be the case, gaming companies would rather use your cpu power than theirs to generate such things, and it is not really profitable. besides, most servers out there are free to play on, no charge, so all a person has to do is set up their own servers.
