Q2E - Anyone still have a copy?
« on: February 18, 2011, 05:21:04 AM »
Like the title says, anyone still have the last release of Quake 2 Evolved? I messed up the main pk2 file and need to get the original map relight files (maps/*.txt) - that's all I need. I can't find a working download link for it anywhere. Yeah I know Q2E sucks, but that's besides the point.

Thanks but no that's an old version, before they added real-time lighting, bump mapping etc.. What I need is version 1.0 Alpha.

From my quick searching, it's not a release binary, just a source code release: http://sourceforge.net/projects/q2e/

I guess it's better than nothing, maybe I can figure out how to format of the relight file from the code or something.

Yeah it doesn't work :/

Maybe they pulled it.  I know they wanted to do a closed source version of their game so maybe it was pulled with the anticipation they'll buy the code.

What did these re-light files do?  Provide different light sources for hardware-based lighting and stencil shadows?  I had thought about doing something like this with Quake2World.. Traditional Quake maps have hundreds of point-light sources in order to achieve decent looking results with lightmaps.  So the "stock" lighting information available in the .BSP is kinda worthless to an engine that can do hardware-based lighting and stencil shadows (for which you would only ever want a handful of light sources in the scene at any point in time).

1 GB in size!  :| That's a tough one considering I have a 10gb cap per month lol. I'll give it a try sometime, maybe download a bit at a time (if it supports resume). Edit: Ok everyone can laugh at me now, I found another copy of Q2E with all original content.

Yeah pretty much adds lights in the given coordinates, intensities etc. like the .map files work in Q4. Without a relight file for a given map, the map will be pitch black, maybe because of the point you made about the hardware-based lighting (although I presume with a bit of shadering of sorts you could have surface lighting to light up the map a bit). Most of the lighting files included in Q2E have a sort of fullbright lighting -  guess it was just a quick way of getting all the stock Q2 maps with some form of lighting. With this fullbright the game also doesn't render the parallax mapping, specularity etc..

Here's some examples of lights in the base1 relight file:
Code: [Select]
{
origin 215 -256 60
radius 80 80 80
style 1
noShadows
material lights/square/High
color 1 0.913725 0.282353
}

Code: [Select]
{
origin 230 1 53
material lights/square/High
color 1 0.913725 0.282353
}

Anyway, to how the problem started: Like a real smartass I went and replaced the Q2E relights with Berserker@Q2 relights thinking it'd be compatible (thought B@Q2 code was a copy of Q2E). Well, it turns out they use very different relights. Bers relight files are more like an actual idTech 4 map file which adds all the data in it to the map - even capable of adding brushes to a map.

Off topic though, what's your take on Dies Irae and Double Impact ending up in QL? And why can't I get Q2W to work on my PC? :(

I'm very happy for ShadoW of course :)  He's an excellent mapper and a super nice guy, and I'm honestly thrilled that id decided to pick up a few of his levels.  It's kinda cool to be able to say that "we had them first" tho ;)

So by "not working," what exactly is going on with it?  Is it just that the menus don't work as expected?  That's a known issue that will be resolved soon-ish (I'm just searching for the free time to work on it).  Other than that, as far as I know the Windows build is quite stable for most people.

You can always ask the rest of the team in #quetoo on Freenode as well, btw.. or if you want to get a game going, too.

Hope this helps,

Whoops, forgot about this thread. Anyway, here's the error:

I'm rocking Win XP,  GeForce 7300 SE, Duel Core 1.6, 1GB RAM.
