block websites through your router?

is there a way to block certain websites if you login to your router? getting sick of being in the middle of a game and someone jumps on the other computer and starts watching youtube clips

the mean way is you could add this entry:

127.0.0.1 www.youtube.com
to the end of the 'hosts' file that resides on the other computer at this location:

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

that will redirect any http traffic going that way to nowhereland.

otherwise you can check your product documentation on the router for an option to block usage on that computer's IP during certain hours/etc

ok i found how to do it. the only thing is it comes up with a heap of crap saying site blocked by url control, please login to your router blah blah blah. don't want it to do that. just want it so when they go to youtube it just remains blank like the thing is down

The best way - but idk if it works coz ur all using NAT - is to go to each pc attached to ur router and do what Dervish said.

Another ways but complicated:

1. Edit your routers "error pages" (requires advance skills)

2. Do some sort of IP forwarding using ur routers Packet Filters (pg 35) to create a rule which re-routes request to youtube to other websites ex. google.

3. Silently install a bandwidth limiter on your friends PC (requires to be super sneaky)

4. Instal a proxy server on ur PC and configure ur friends PC to use a proxy server in their browser..

any program could use the bandwidth, so you might want to see if the router does qos.  you could then reserve Xbps for quake 2 on your machine.  otherwise anything you do might not work properly, but you could go to torrent and things and set max traffic.
