Quake 2 No longer loads on my computer (Mac)

Last night I was looking into adding a double jump alias to my autoexec.cfg file.  I added the lines to my autoexec, saved it, and opened the game.  I created a server, typed "map q2dm1" in console, and then ran the autoexec.  I started testing out the jumps on the map, and when I was satisfied, I quit the game from the console.  A little later on, I went to run the game again, and when I opened it, and every time since then, I just get a blank screen. 

I know that my autoexec.cfg changes often end up being saved in the config.cfg file, but I seriously doubt that adding that one line could cause the game to not load. 

I've tried putting in the original pak files 0/1 (currently using adrenalines stuff), but I still get the same issue. 

The only things I remember doing before were alt-tabbing out to pause my itunes, which caused the game to crash, but it loaded fine after that.  It was only after I added the double jump alias into my autoexec/config that it stopped working correctly.  Can you think of any ideas?

That's the only thing I added to the autoexec.  When I start the game it runs through demos, and I have to either enter console or hit escape to get menu options.

When you start the game how much information does it utilize from the config.cfg that would affect initial menu display and demos?

Have you tried the number 1 super first step of troubleshooting by turning your mac completely off for a minute then turning it back on?

Still nothing.  I left it off for a couple minutes, booted up, and it still sticks on a black screen.  I'm trying to delete all instances of the application and plug ins, and reinstall them, while leaving all the downloaded information in the quake2 file.

When I first got the game to work, all I had were the 2 original PAK files that I downloaded from the internet, the Fruitz of dojo application, and whatever plugins came with it.  I changed the name of my existing quake folder to quake 3, made a new folder called quake 2, and then opened the game with just the bare essentials.  It worked.  The game opened in software mode, and I got opengl to work.  I thought I would never be able to play again and I was heartbroken.

I honestly have no idea....there are a couple of commands that are unrecognizable in my version - anisotropic, gl_coloredlightmaps, etc.  Maybe there are different commands for my opengl renderer?  I finally got everything working.  It really didn't make any sense to me, but if I had certain lines in my autoexec, quake2 wouldn't load.  If I took those lines out, quake2 would load.  I have no idea why that would make a difference, but simply removing a couple commands from the autoexec and then starting the application was the difference between seeing the demo/menu and seeing a black screen.  I'm not sure why, but that's what worked for me.

Any setting with a gl prefix is related to video.

Anisotropic filtering is a video setting that enhances the image quality of skins rendered on slanted or curved 3d surfaces drawn at a distance... I think.

Coloredlightmaps controls the intensity of the colored lights that reflect off the map surfaces. The variable ranges from 0 to 1 I believe. At 1, a lot of the maps will have a distinct orange hue to a lot of the walls. At 0, most of the walls will have a decidedly more gray or brown color. Think of it as a colored light bulb hanging over that portion of the map. The more of those colored light bulbs there are, the more the area will appear to be that color and not whatever color might actually be painted on the sheetrock by a mexican day-laborer.  :badgrin: You can also use a setting like 0.4 or 0.3 or anything between 0 and 1 to fine-tune this setting to your liking.

When I type gl_coloredlightmaps in the console, I get a "command not recognized" message.

When I type gl_coloredlightmaps in the console, I get a "command not recognized" message.

the command is specific to the r1gl renderer and the proprietary aprq2 renderer

I think there used to be a webpage somewhere that contained a complete list of all Quake2 console settings with an explanation as to what each individual setting controlled or how it would affect the client. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Anyone got the link? And if someone DOES know what I'm talking about, wouldn't it be a great idea to perhaps post it in it's entirety in a stickied thread for easy community reference?

And in relation to what Vae said, I think it would also be handy to have a similar list of additional settings/commands for each of the updated clients in the same location.

most major clients like r1q2, aprq2, q2pro, egl... they all have config generators online that tell each cvar and explain what it is and will generate a config file for you... they arent COMPLETE lists, and idk if they exist for less popular clients like a useless mac one :P

there is also lists of every cvar in the stock q2 which a lot of clients still use ofc :)
