One guess is you traveresed an MPLS network on the new path to the different destination.  These hops won't respond with TTL exceeded messages, and can be configured to change the time to live value in the packet or keep it the same.  So really it still could of been 30 hops, just a traceroute won't show it.

ignore the really high ones in mine, just problems with being too far from my dsl tree. i drop about 20ms on average with new ip, which is wonderful. also drop 7 hops in trace.
