Making sound happen..
« on: October 30, 2010, 07:40:24 PM »
I've been here before and have a new wrinkle..

I'd like to play sounds in other computers and mine while playing Quake2.

It used to work fine and now can't get it to work, even with my own server....

Past repllies advised anti-cheat devices made wav-file exchange suppressed, but I have my own server and it still doesn't work.  Any help where I can look for answers anyone?

Thanks, The Beast Within

to my knowledge the play command is client side... there is most likely no way to make some one else hear a sound when you play it on your own client...

the only way i know it is possible to make some one hear a sound file is if you are a server admin, force the file down to them, and then stuff a command to play that file, but still only they will hear it not everyone

My brother }{awkins and I used to put 12 sound packages on our computers and would play them back and forth.  IE, 'run forest run' when my brother would run w/1 health left and I missed a kill.
run forest was setup with the f buttons and we had 12 to choose from.  When I hit F1, we would both hear the same wav file.  Maybe there's a way to include it in the server.cfg?

Thanks,

Hmmmmm
Don't know the difference...
I put up a server, then start my game... the server and my game come from two different drives..

A "listen" server and "dedicated" server.... can you explain?  OR point me towards one?

well a listen server is your client running a server while you are playing on it... dedicated is a dif exe i think that runs a server all by itself without the need of a person playing on it... online servers are all dedicated, most of the time if you set up a local game its a listen server

when running a listen server where your client and the server are running from the same exe it automatically gives you admin rights to your server, so playing a sound off of that as a command in the actual server and not just a client command might have been what would cause multiple people to hear it...

i dont really know honestly :P just a guess at this point... but i do know that the play command is client side and shouldnt be heard by other players, the only way i think it could be heard by multiple people is something with the server

Used to play with that years ago for laughs.. Wod vers. 8.0 had that voice command ,as long as both have the same wav.files, but it is a Wod mod.. ;D
