Recently, I have made the EPIC switch of keyboard layout from the traditional QWERTY to DVORK. I barely started exactly one week ago and I'm already typing 45 wpm. I am hoping that in a month I'll be back to my normal QWERTY speed at 80 wpm.
My choice had been a long tedious one. I had been looking into it for about a month. It wasn't up until I came across the Zine that really supplemented my choice. I was a bit frustrated at first when as soon as I switched to Dvorak I got an IM on AIM. And I couldn't type anything. It was rough for about two days. Now, I'm doing better. I also noticed that whenever I touch type, my fingers aren't traveling all over the keyboard to get to a letter like I used to in QWERTY. And to help me out I switched the keys on my keyboard That way I wouldn't decide to give up and go back to QWERTY

Anyone have any thoughts on QWERTY, Dvorak, or Colemak???

I wouldn't mind trying this out.  If you look into why keyboards use the QWERTY layout, you'll see why other layouts like DVORAK exist.

Can you still type proficiently using a QWERTY keyboard?

I just tried typing stuff right now on QWERTY. It appears I lost the muscle memory for it. Guess I'm stuck to DVORAK

But I'm used to it already! So it doesn't effect me. If I ever want to go back to QWERTY, I suppose I can take a typing course on it. But, that would be a waste of time.

The DVORAK is designed to be more comfortable, and also allows you to type faster.  The QWERTY layout has been around since the early days of the typewriter.  QWERTY style was designed to prevent old-style typewriters from jamming up, among other issues irrelevant to today's methods of typing.

This does bring up a point though. I guess Dvorak users are apart of a minority among the Technology world that isn't recognized. Kinda like being left handed in a right handed world.
