I have a new Ge-Force vid card as well

that could of been useful information. 

try deleting your config.cfg & your autoexec.cfg (except your custom binds).  Any special settings in the vid control panel?

OK now you lost me. Those 2 files are needed for Quake to run properly. Do you mean disable them and let Quake create a new one? What about r1gl?

And yes Foc it's bright - but not overly so. It was fine on my old system (and vid-card) before everything blew up. So I'm tediously trying this and that to get closer to the old look.

If you delete your config's Q2 just makes default ones.  Deleting is safer then renaming, but you can rename them too (I always add ".old" to the end).

Here ya go. Renamed both config and autoexec. Quake generated its own config. As expected it's very dark. It is actually much darker than the screenshot shows. The menu screen was still black.

Maybe there's some kind of conflict between my desktop vid settings and Quake 2. My desktop looks fine.

I had this issue a year and a half ago but solved it somehow. As I remember, videos I played looked grainy and too bright also. thought it might have been an update to GomPlayer.

probably a setting in your nvidia control panels advanced properties... dunno which one but thats my guess lol

or the brightness on the monitor is way down.  that screenshot should be what's heading out to your monitor.

Yeah I wish it looked like that. But it's virtually black. I have an older 19" Samsung CRT running at 85 hz. There is no brightness control in the menu. The closest thing are the color temperatures, which I haven't a clue what the proper settings would be.

 I guess I can live with it. When I increased the Desktop gamma brightness, the menu lightened up a bit, but washed out the desktop color. Maybe the monitor's showing it's age.

A CRT w/o brightness?  I'd have to see it to believe it. 

Is this the only game it happens for?  What about if you try out software or normal OGL mode?  Or if you use stock quake2.exe?

Well it does but it's well hidden. There are arrow keys on the monitor that are for navigating thru the menu features like position etc. If you don't invoke the menu and press one of the arrow keys a brightness/contrast menu appears. Otherwise its not marked. Anyway they were both at 100% which is the factory recommended setting. I've played with the Q2 vid settings some more and the appearance is better. I'll just leave the Q2 menu as dark. I can still see what they are.
