Menu Display in Q2

I've had this problem before but can't remember if it fixed itself or what.
 I lost all my Quake (r1q2) settings when my hard drive crashed so I'm rebuilding them by trial and error. When I start Q2 the ordinary Menu screen is fine and readable. However once I go to the server, connect and look at it again, it goes almost black and is barely readable. This is in R1Q2. It's strange because on first loading of Quake it looks fine, just as it always has. Even odder - when I took a screenshot of it (png format) - the screenshot is normal. W...t....f...?

Is there a command to "brighten" the Menu screen?

Im having problems myself. Ive been getting lag for weeks and last night I tried running q2 from my 64bit win7. Only problem was the graphics. I checked my nvidia settings and changed it to "application controls settings"  Its fine now

ReCycled, it's not uncommon if a screenshot from a videogame looks brighter on your desktop's gamma settings than it does in-game. 
I know r1q2 has something called vid_flip_on_switch: (restores original desktop display settings when task switching out of Quake2). Perhaps enable/disable that.

Right now when you start Quake2 it looks as if it doesn't properly switch and 'take' all the video settings from your cfg and/or autoexec unless the game loads up a map or connects to a server?  If you use an autoexec.cfg then adding a 'vid_restart' at the end might change something.  But at this point I'd think that your gamma settings are still quite dark. What are your gl_modulate/vid_gamma/intensity values?

This is not about the use of the menu..., it is about his screen getting a lot darker than it was at first after he's connected to a server and entered the game.

(And of course doing everything from the command line/config would render the console pretty much useless, so no, that's not the same as doing it from the console.)

perhaps i misread it, but what i got out of it was that when he starts r1q2 is menu screen is fine, but if he connects anywhere and checks it again its really dark

Yes and instead of trying to help him with his problem you question his need for the menu. Anyway we better just let ReCycled post back here after he has tested and tried some things.

Thanks Acer for the response. All my modulate, gamma, intensity values are good. I've been playing with loads of combinations yesterday and my current one is fine. Actually it's a bit bright. It does not look like the screenshot I posted. After a lot of testing everything is acceptable except the Menu screen is still black. It has a black background and the lettering has white edging so I can still read it. It's just odd that is like that and everything else is OK. I had this same problem when I first installed r1q2 a year and a half ago and somewhere along the line it got fixed.
I'll try the flip_switch thingee and vid_restart in my autoexec. I'm also doing this on my new PC which has Win7 so maybe it's a glitch there.

i'd rather see a picture so it's 100% more accurate.  Try window.  I always seem to play Q2 in a window because I always seem to need to bounce between Q2 & something else.

You're using r1q2 gl?

Yes ...r1gl. It affects other things as well. The "loading" sign is blackish. Should be light grey. Some objects and creatures have black sections now. Barrels, grey armor, some monsters. The black disappears if you zoom in closer. I'm pretty sure these are all related. I have a new Ge-Force vid card as well. It has 1 gig of memory.
