Q2Cafe 8th Mapping Contest Servers...

Ok, 1 week to go guys. 
Maps from two mappers is in so far..

So we have a week before the deadline to get the maps in and then 1 to 2 weeks of judging before they are released. I think that now is the time to start organizing and advertising the Splatterfest that will follow the map release.

Last year I believe that Quadz dedicated the dm2 server for this purpose. I'm hoping that we can use that location again. If not then we have the option of using The Happy Friar's server, or mine if all else fails.

Anybody else getting excited for some new maps?

Still hammering out map structure,  deadline is gonna be tight.  Very little free time as of late.

if you run low on time, choose your priorities wisely.

make sure you have the map geometry and entity layout to a playable state, and leave the fancy trick bits for last so you can maximize your score by making something that has redeeming play value just not all the pretty.

fancy lighting and sounds take time, and crazy traps and such even more.

same can go for texturing. If you don't have time to align a bunch of textures perfectly to get that certain look you're going for, use some of the basic near-solid color textures from stock q2 as placeholders so at least the map is finished to a .bsp and usable.

All done,  as much as it's going to get.   Realistically I should have scrapped it and started over....

Looks like we are going to have a deadline extended for mappers. This is not unusual so sit tight for updates.


In case anyone is curious, the prevailing logic for extending deadlines is this: The contest is held in order to get more new maps. Without extending the deadline then we get less new maps.


I doubt that this will be too long of a hold up, although I think that some of the fan favorites will be given a lot of consideration if they need even more time (Sandwich, Spirit, Yendor)

Maps are in. Judging is happening this week. Time to start the planning. I'll keep everyone updated.

You can turn in more than one map?!   I would have refined my first attempt into a playable state if I knew that. 

Yendor's looks like it will need a 20 minute timelimit just to explore all of it, 
if we loose track of time we can check the time on friar's map. there has to be a clock in there somewhere!


Top notch appearance in jesters map,  to bad marics has no entry.  Them two would be like a dahang vs damiah match.

Will be a fun splatterfest,  I should be able to play.

It's in the screenshot.    But I didn't bother to make it correct.  If it was Doom 3 it would be easy, but I didn't want to do the math to figure it out for Q2.

Just as an update, i finally finished scoring and have submitted them to the head judge.


Tonight sounds like too soon to have the official event, so I'll propose next Sunday night on the q2c forums and we'll go form there.
