I can think of a bunch of them, but the first punk started in the 60's - not the late 70's. Punk is simply chord based, garage hard rock. The attitude can be real or fake. Most punk musicians had all the technical ability of my crinkled bumhole so they made up the shortfall with "attitude". Wow - that guy spit in my face. He's got attitude.

Jim Carroll wrote the book and movie The Basketball Diaries, one of my favorite movies. Unfortunately he died a little over a year ago. He was a great poet too. I'd highly recommend watching The Basketball Diaries as well as picking up a copy of one of his books of poetry if you're into that kinda thing. Nothing like Robert Frost, just to warn you.

some of misfit's songs were kinda cool, dig up her bones and resurrection were my 2 favorites. Minor threat was just garbage though.. I still have their demo tape somewhere, the original. Worst cd I think I've ever heard... even when I LOVED punk at age 12-14 I thought it was trash.

Sublime self titled album was the first cd I ever bought(yard sale).. when I was 10 or something, so that's what originally got me into the punk phase. I listened to more of the punk that you hear in beach/surfing communities..... whether from the west coast or the east coast. Everyone was obsessed with every band signed by "Fat wreck-chords" (fat mike from NOFX's label) at my school.

So newer punk, early 90's is what I enjoyed the most:

A lot of these bands have stuck around for 20 years though still writing songs......playing the same old shit. It's to the point where it all sounds the same. fkn punks.

Iggy Pop finally got the Stooges back together in 2007 to make a new album, their first since the 70's, and it actually turned out to be pretty killer. Here's some of my favorites from it... actually, I like them all, and I'd post them all if I could find them.

What? No Ramones? Being a young kid living a pretty sheltered life in Sticks Missississippi, almosy all my music exposure was Hee-Haw and the local Top 40/Easy listening station. All that changed when I got an 8-track player and joined one of those music clubs!

The Ramones were and still are a band that makes me laugh.
