Finally got Quake 2 working

> Hey guys, Creamy here. First of all, despite the difficulties I was having at this year's QuakeCon, I had a really fun time at the event, and it was great meeting you all. Now, I've been having problems with getting Quake 2 to run properly in Ubuntu for well over a year, because the mouse wouldn't work in the game for some reason. However, because of the help I got from the TastySpleen crew at the QuakeCon, I was finally on my way to solving this annoying problem. Square came by my table and gave me the source code for a version of Quake 2 called APRQ2, but when he tried to compile the code, he ran into some dependency issues. He didn't have time to solve those issues on the spot, and because of the QuakeCon's shitty Internet connection, I wasn't able to do anything about it either.

So this post is a big thank you to the TastySpleen community for helping me to finally get my favorite FPS to run properly on the Creamy Entertainment System, and I hope to see you all again in 2012.

there is a simple solution, get winXP. I know i am gonna get shouted down for this but all linux distro's suck in general, but they really suck at trying to get games to run. Linux is free and imo you get what you pay for. Linux won't become mainstream and there will always be lack of support because it is not user friendly. for an OS that is free you have to wonder why people are not flocking to use it in the masses. I suggest you go back to windows, but not any windows....try XP it is the best windows ever made. Vista sucks, new win7 sucks, any linux distro sucks, XP all the way!

Eh.. I have to disagree. Linux is indeed user friendly, if you're not trying to do all this complicated shit, compile your own game clients, port things over, etc.. If you're just using it as a computer, nothing complicated, linux is the way to go, It's gorgeous, Blazing fast, And it's named after food, can't go wrong. Yes, Compatibility for things such as gaming might be a little frustrating atm, But that's entirely because people WON'T give it a chance, people are too scared to learn something new, Face it, stick someone brand new to computers in front of linux, and one in front of a windows machine, they're both gonna be equally wtfing, If people were to give up windows, and help linux advance to the point where it was absurd to be using anything else, as opposed to paying for OS's that fuck with your head constantly and make you jump through hoops because microsoft is an evil cunt, (Yes, all as one, Microsoft is a cunt. An evil cunt. One that hasn't been washed properly and smells like rotten milk and pickles.) Then we would have entirely free operating systems, people won't have to worry about how they 'stumbled' upon their copy of <insert piece of shit here>, Best thing is if you take the time, it's all open source, You can do whatever the fuck you so please to do when you so fucking please to do so. I remember getting you on linux, uninstalled VERY shortly after, All I can say is I don't think you gave it a fair chance alpha, I picked up on the terminal use after about a day, I compiled a driver for my winmodem about 2-3 days later, You've got your software manager that lists TONS of shit that you can choose to download through it, You've got your linux updates much like windows only less evil, you've got your package manager, for ... packages.. of things.. 'n stuff, idk.. It's late and I cant sleep so I'm here ranting about the first thing I read, To each his own.. Hold thy penis, For if thy holds thou's penis, Thy will have thou's penis in thy's hand.. Not thy's penis.. WUT  :frustration:

linux aint bad :) and IN GENERAL it sucks for gaming, but all id software games and the unreal tournament series all run just fine

windows 7 actually isnt bad, i just wont use it for gaming due to small preference issues... vista did suck hard though

i also run xp as my main os, its the best version of windows, but i am a firm believer in linux and would run it more if i wasnt always getting new games designed to run on windows because i can do everything but games on linux or even bsd with as much ease as windows, with better security, more speed, and a nicer user interface

also most people dont know how far linux has advanced, ubuntu is crazy user friendly now, if you want a work station, ubuntu would satisfy all your needs, but a gaming rig at the moment you should stick to win7 or winXP

as far as quake2 is concerned... only disadvantage of linux is the lack of an anticheat module... oh well hackers arent crazy hard to spot anyway :) if they hack on linux, their first time caught resulting in forced anticheat is basically a ban haha

aprq2 is better than the 3.21 linux client from id software, it has a lot of advantages, larger file support for custom content, it has http reroute downloading so you can download files you dont have from the server MUCH faster than the old 7kbps of udp

i suggest you just use the aprq2 client, once you get it configured youll like it more :) guarantee it
