ok when i go to play dvd's through windows media player i get this error "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer." now i did some looking around and it turns out i have to pay for a decoder from microsoft which i think is bullshit, because as far as i am concerned if u have bought windows, everything should work without having to buy a seperate thing just to get a dvd to work. So i download VLC media player and it plays my dvd's, but the frustration comes when i go to record a section of a movie and try and ad it to windows movie maker it won't because it doesn't recognise mpg format or some shit like that. So i go searching for a FREE tool that can convert mpg to wmv or mpeg but i can't find one program that can without paying. the free ones u get, has all this fucking shit run across the video until u pay for it. Anyone got any suggestions?

I use Gom player. Its free and plays almost everything.
If you want to convert formats, try AVS video converter. Its free if you know where to look

It's not a matter of not being able to afford it, its only $17 odd, its a matter of principal. Why should i have to pay for something that should work?, and I don't trust torrents, most come with viruses these days

no it is not free. you download it, then convert then only to discover it splashes their shit over the video and asks you to pay for the full version

I torrented a full version of AVS via piratebay. It's pretty handy. Even has some nifty editing tools with it. Lets you chose different codecs per format. I wish I still had the name of the file I got, it was clean. Check piratebay. Whichever one has the most seeders and no comments claiming it's infected.

i acutally just had to reformat, but before i did i downloaded the full cd of quake2 off piratebay it works fine, so now i have it on cd. As for you erica didn't u read what i typed? lol i used VLC BUT u can record a scene but it saves in mpg format and u can't import it to windows movie maker because of the codecs problem. I have seen where u can choose what extention to save it as but it was a pain in the ass and didn't work

With so many different media formats today, one player won't do them all. That's why I have 3 Players on my desktop. They will all play common avi, mpg and wmv files. But there are many varieties of video coming from cellphones and deskcams that have unique codecs.

My VLC player will play Apple Qwiktme (mov) fles. My GOM player will play RealPlayer (ram) movies. I've never looked what my DVD's use but it's probably Media Player or a dedicated DVD player that came with Vista.

Just keep a shortcut for all 3 on your dektop, and drag your file onto one of the 3 if your default one doesn't play the media file you have.

Seemed to have been a drive-by download contained in an ad. I'm sure they started getting complaints and removed it. Haven't had any trouble with drive-by downloads or AV detecting or warning of anything located there since then.
