"I have a Dream..." [About Quake2]
« on: July 30, 2010, 11:29:47 AM »
Hi!
Personally, I've seen other communities in the Quake series and how they are today.

QL = The Quake Live community today is the largest of all, no doubt! They are well organized and active.

Q3A = She was killed because of Quake Live. obvious. But we still have some people playing, especially FFA and a duel and ctf in CPMA. But this community has done a LOT to Q3!

Q2 = It's what's behind them all. Community somewhat disunited and apathetic.  :'(

QW = The second most evolved of all well organized and still has many people playing, organizing tournaments and creating more things.

Well, it all but I am speaking of today because Quake2 has been VERY big. As proof of this we see the huge amount of Mods, Maps, Model Players, Skins, Utilities, etc, which was done for Q2.

But I would like, and I think many should agree with me, that the main problem today is the standardization of updates executable Q2. Are created from time to time several new clients anticheats as NoCheat, AprQ2, EGL, R1Q2, etc.

What we need is a UNIQUE NEW CLIENT who has the best of all these new clients that were created! ONE that has the best netcode (AprQ2), better gameplay (R1Q2), better design (EGL), More miscs options (AprQ2, Q2pro), something like what they did with the Quake World, in toher words, a client that is as "ezQuake! A new client like this:

-Having how to creat demos in: ".dm2", ".avi" e ".mvd".

-Having the option change the game visual like regular(original default) or like in EGL Client.

-Having many Hud options like: colored letters, hud clocks, fun names, GL video sets, etc.

-Having a browser server VERY, VERY enhanced, with more details and that can see all servers in the world.

-Don´t lost the capacidade to read ancient files like ".cin" (to that can play offline, sinlge-player), ".pcx" e ".wal".

-Specially Having that can load of initial hud the Missions Packs Xatrix e Rogue, cuz are officials mods to q2.

-Having a menu to load others mods.

Remembering that Quake2 has no official updates to v3.23:

I think all the programers of the q2 new clients should come together and create something unique and great. I'm not a programmer, but I really would help with something but I can only give ideas. :( (I will try make some Rogue maps...)

Well, what do you think, folks?

Q2 = It's what's behind them all. Community somewhat disunited and apathetic.  :'(

i've seen the same handles on here & other Q2 related sites.

As far as I can tell, Q2 is the most active id game out there atm.   Only thing QL has is player count.  That's as shallow as the next patch or new free game.

It would be very nice if there could be more 4vs4 matches.  How do get the people?  I don't know.  I like some the above ideas like an integrated server finder, and if there would videos made with fraps on how to start playing that might be good.

I think all the programers of the q2 new clients should come together and create something unique and great. I'm not a programmer, but I really would help with something but I can only give ideas.

Give some ideas to these guys?

Only two things Q2 needs, imho, to make it "competitive" with modern games is the new server browser & menu to run mods.

But we've got Wallfly.   I'd say other game community's would happily give up their browsers, menus,  etc. to have something THAT useful.

I can imagine so many gamers (that put up with watered down shite like QL) would love the Q2 experience if given a chance. The problem is that Q2 is just not accessible for new players to just pick up and play.

Just look at the hassle people have to go through to just get game going.

1) Install the game from the CD or download a copy
2) Download and install the patches
3) Then to find an active server list
4) Then discover they could do with R1Q2 / Anticheat

The other major problem is the stock Q2 graphics / settings in 2010 look dreadful and would put off 99% of new people.

If the game could be repacked (maybe with high res or even new textures), all the updates including R1Q2 and a server browser then this might be what is needed to bring some new blood into the game.

quakelive isnt watered down its just different and still a decent quake game, and quake2 is pretty easy to set up, just no client menus to do so :)

the q2kicker you can get by clicking the "get q2" thing at the top of the tastyspleen web pages... repackaged, anticheat, aprq2 client, good video config, a nice start on a decent autoexec.cfg for you to play with, custom paks with tihngs like bright skins included but are optional to put into baseq2 with directions in the readme :) comes default with high res textures... i mean if you want to start into q2 just pick that up

All players of Quake games should get along. It's what Dr. King would've wanted.

QL isn't watered down? Now I'll admit to not having played it for a good 5 or 6 months but seriously?

All I can remember is them constantly nerfing weapons in the name of 'balance'. The rail gun was degraded so there were no more one shot kills on spawn. Also the lightning gun felt like you were spaying someone with a weak garden hose. In QW the lightning gun was devastating... Not to mention the same boring physics, maps and cartoon graphics / sounds that made Q3 (for me) such a disaster.

Anyone remember Carmack's Quake II remix idea from back in 2003?

quakelive isnt watered down, it just has different aspects to focus on than quake2 or somethin

the movement is still fine, its simple but its smooth and allows for nice things like some interesting rocket propulsion :)

the weapon balance is EXTREMELY balanced almost to the point of being boring, BUT it puts more importance on things like using the right weapon in the right situation and being efficient with each weapon

the railgun was NEVER a one shot kill in quake3, and its better that way because of the unlagged code, quake3 rail is significantly easier than quake2 rail... it doesnt take as much skill to get a consistent 50% rail... plus the rail fires faster in quakelive

the lightning gun changes have been quite annoying to put up with because i love the weapon :/ but honestly where its at now doesnt feel bad at all... just have to get used to it, its not such a deadly weapon like chain but its harder to use effectively

it does need better maps, which is gonna be taken care of at the same time as killing it with pay to play accounts... but the game itself certainly aint bad :)

I totally agree about the rail. In Q2, even on a LAN the shots have a very slight delay which adds a small element of prediction. The Q2 rail (including the sound and visuals) is absolutely perfect and the most satisfying weapon I've ever used in any game.

As for the lightning gun, it just can't compare to QW. I remember some of the crazy stuff you could pull off such as pinning someone against a ceiling and then smashing them with a rocket almost instantly.

Weapon balance completely drains the fun out of the game.

I would love for both QW and Q2 to be brought right up to date (preferably by Id Software) but without any changes to the physics, maps or weapons.

i've read comments that Q2's rail is a "rail gun", Q3A's is a "sniper rifle".  ;)

There's nothing stopping anybody from making their own 100% free Q2 experience & giving that away.  You'd need to replace every asset in the game, but it could be done!  You could even include r1q2's exe in the package.

But the Q2 community is more focused on making content for the game vs trying to bring in new players who aren't really interested in anything pre-2004 anyway.
