Question About TDM & 1v1
« on: November 01, 2005, 01:10:37 PM »
It's a lil embarrassing asking this, but here goes.  At present I am mostly an FFA player.  However, I am tired of it.  There is no grace, no style, and I'm not improving at the rate I want to improve by playing it.  I see TDM and gx as a way to improve, but its hard to find a way in... plus I don't have any teamplay binds and wouldn't know where to get them.  Can someone kind of nudge me in the proper direction?  I would love to start getting competitive, but its hard to know where to begin.

I was like that when all I played was Railz. Now I tend to play tdm and 1v1 more, I just hang around the servers and see who want's to play, I suck though so I nearly always get owned! I also have no teamplay binds, so any bind's for basic, may I also have? (As a guideline), if I catch you on the tourney servers ill play with you basic =)

;D! I'm glad you show interest in trying out something new such as tdm... Well, this is a loaded question and I know I cannot answer it fully because I will most likely leave something out, but here it goes anyway:

I did not get into teamplay until a few months ago and I've been loving it. At one point of my quaking days I tried teamplay/gx but the attitude of some of the players just blew me away so I stuck with FFA. but nowadays I'm playing teamplay and less of FFA since I found the right kind of people to play with. ;D

Typically there are players on the ts tourney servers where you can find pickup games, if there is no one there usually people will come when other people are there. (unless there is a tourney match going on, then they get priority of the server.)

Typical binds would include weapon drops (you can even drop two weapons with one bind. Say you grabbed a machinegun and don't have a chaingun, if you bind a button to both weapons you can drop a machinegun), location of where you are/health amount/armor amount, and timers (red armor/yellow armor - 20 seconds and weapons - 30 seconds, and if quad is on - quad respawns in 60 seconds)

Here's some examples:
bind kp_end "say_team Enemy @ $loc_here"
bind  INS "drop rockets; drop rocket launcher; wave 1;say_team Dropped RL @ $loc_here"
bind HOME "drop bullets; drop bullets; drop chaingun; drop machinegun; wave 1;say_team Dropped MG/CHAIN @ $loc_here"
bind kp_ins "stopsound; play armortimer.wav; say_team Armor +20"
bind kp_downarrow "say_team I'm @ $loc_here - %h %a "

I use NoCheat so the number of $'s on the locs could be either one $ or two $$. Also, the armor and health amount thing doesn't work for some clients.

I hope that mess up there was helpful in some way, hehe. Good luck and I hope to see you on the teamplay servers soon!

Oh, and I can zip up the locs and timers I have for you... if you'd like. ;D

EDIT: Also any questions you may have, you can always contact me somehow. I'd be glad to help you to the best of my ability. My explaination up there was pretty brief and abstract. :P

Oh right, and you put all those binds here: quake2/base2/autoexec.cfg

iv been wanting some team binds and weapon binds
i think someone posted some for me awhile back, that iv been trying to figure out how to use

but its so complicated for me still, my problem is, there so complex
i cant even set them up and bind them to keys :P i dont even know what does what rofl
i dont play team games that much, so i kinda gave up on it
but i would also consider getting into it to help raise my skill if someone could write me some "neat" team binds and weapons drops
that even the n00bish of n00bs could understand :P

TDM is great fun, and is enhanced incredibly by those who use teamspeak...what a riot!

At one point I was working on a full list of the binds that my clan uses for all the maps we play 4v4 but I got somewhat distracted and never finished it, but here's as far as I got with it. These are all from my cfg...

bind key say_team [

this is what i hate about the time iv spent playing fps games
quake2 was my first online game that i had played, i started about 1 year or so after it had been released
i played for a few months, then got distracted by quake3, then after that. as new games came out. just went on to them
and never stuck with just one. now im back at playing quake2, and i totaly suck. because i never stuck with just one game
i was always trying to learn how to play a different one all the time

but you would think that the amount of time that i have spent playing in general, i would be half decent by now
it feels like i totaly wasted 7-8 years of my life lol

Basic,

Do a search on here for team binds - this forum is a good resource for them, a lot of people posted their autoexecs on here (check out "Team Binds").  As for improving - like Adam said, just hang out on tastyspleen and see who's in which tourney server.  I recommend playing people who are close to your own ability - otherwise it can be pretty boring or pretty frustrating.  Check out your damage given versus received stat at the end of matches - this may be obvious, but if you give more damage than you receive and score more or less equal to your opponent that means your aim is making up for poor strategy.  If you receive more damage than you give and still win your strategy is making up for poor aim.  Hmmm, that could be clearer and certainly isn't necessarily true, but it's an interesting stat to look at to rate your strategy.

YOU WILL IMPROVE!!!

the best bind for 1v1 IMO is "right click takes you to chain" finish them off :)

if you wanna be good at 1v1 then play it all the time and don't worry about losing, because you are gonna lose.
that is why I am not any good at 1v1 :)
(or at least one of the reasons)

I wrote a really complex TDM config.. even when I sent it to skilled players they had a hard time deciphering some of it.. if you guys want, I can try to find some time to write up and nice, easy to understand teamplay config for everyone on the TS servers to use.

I mean., that's if you want me to..  :evilking:

There's a sticky thread about playing 1v1, I suggest you look at it. I didn't...so I don't really know if it's useful but you should check it out. :)

Element, that would indeed be awesome.  I think TDM is missing out on some potential TDM'ers simply because of how daunting and intimidating the whole scene can seem, even on Tastyspleen Tourney servers!  If we all had access to some relatively simple teamplay binds, we could at least get started learning the ins and outs of teamplay and work on modifying the cfg's to our liking later.
