Ever since the Salami neck massage was posted in funny videos by our benevolent leader, I've started watching more Zappa interviews regularly. Found this one pretty interesting. Just finished part 1:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFdJjVyKD8s
Q: "What advice would you give students who want to get into the music industry
A: "There are 2 things. Number 1, don't stop. Number 2, keep going."
I love how brutally honest he is about the cut-throat industry that music can be.

Well I'd say the music industry WAS cut throat in the past. But I would be surprised if it will exist in it's old format for much longer. Digital has changed everything. With vinyl the industry controlled the biz because they controlled the product. Too expensive to do it on your own. Anyone can set up a small home studio that can have good quality demos, with the price of stuff today. You can also manage your own production of CD's. But why would you bother? The first few consumers will rip your CD and put it on the Net for free. No royalties for you, so why go through all the time and effort. If your music is purposely released for free so it helps your ticket sales doing live concerts then that's fine. It just shifts earning a living, playing music, from recording to live concert. The days of producing an album and sitting back while the royaly checks drift in are long gone. Who even needs a "recording industry"? I can do that part myself and just hire a manager to book my gigs and handle some of the PR.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
