does anyone know if wireless broadband is faster than adsl? and is wireless user freindly to gaming? just trying to see if i can get my ping down into the 180's or there abouts. don't know if it will be possible

I had adsl thru a wireless router for a year without problems.  Make sure the router is close to the pc (no walls to go thru or anything)
Been hooking up directly since the laptop crapped out.

I'm assuming by "faster" you're referring to latency.  I doubt that wireless would be as low, or as consistent as adsl but that's without any knowledge of the providers in your area.

A properly configured fixed wireless ISP will have latency of < 5ms to their trunk. With ADSL, you're looking at 20ms or higher depending on interleaving from the modulation overhead. So at best you might shave 10-15ms off your ping, but it's pretty hard to a fixed wireless ISP correctly, with interference and retransmissions and poor network management it could be orders of magnitude worse.

I read this to be a question about wireless internet like WiFi vs. wired internet on ADSL.

Faster has two components, speed, and latency.

Speed is bandwidth. This is the steady-state bandwidth of a download or the rated "speed" of the connection, as in 5 Mbps ADSL vs 7 Mbps WiFi, WiFi wins this "speed" rating at those bandwidths. This is the "advertized speed" of a connection. ISPs won't guarantee their numbers. "Faster internet" is an advertizing slogan and means absolutely nothing except as a bandwidth statement about the provisioned service they provide.

Latency is the delay between the sending of a packet and the receipt of a reply to that packet. Latency has two components, the delay "in flight" from one end to the other, and the delay at the other host in receiving and processing the packet and composing and transmitting a reply. "ping" includes both components in it's measurement.

Time in flight is HIGHLY variable, depending on the path between ends and the amount of traffic along the routes, no two packets need to take the same route, in fact, the reply packet need not take the same route as your sent packet. Congestion along the route makes it vary from moment to moment and over the course of days or weeks.

Congestion becomes VERY IMPORTANT for WiFi connections. Even more important than for Cable Internet. Why? Because it depends on RADIO and propagation of digital radio signals is very sketchy. Further, your radio signal is contending for the radio spectrum with other WiFi users who want that same speed you do. They might be closer to the service tower than you are and they can capture or hog that bandwidth under certain conditions. The only time WiFi is more desirable over a wired connection is for portable or field operations or where the cost of installing the wired infrastructure per subscriber is too high to warrant the investment by the ISP.
