constantly redownloading maps?
« on: October 17, 2005, 10:30:33 PM »
[using Quake demo on linux]

When i decided to start playing multiplayer, my first task was to download  the "all" packages at http://tastyspleen.net/quake/downloads/ after reading a few posts here. I installed to ~/.quake2/baseq2 like the readme said, but i don't think it's working. When i try to connect to any of the tastyspleen servers, it goes into a really long cycle of downloading all the maps - a baseq2 folder appeared in ~ shortly afterwards. I renamed to folder (incase i need it later), and created a link from ~./.quake2/baseq2 to ~./baseq2, to see if the game would quit confusing itself - it didn't.

I let one of the maps (railz) finish downloading, and, sure enough - it works. The problem is that it takes forever for them to download, and someone changes the map by the time it finishes  :erhmmm:

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Hmm... Well some of our Linux players may be able to chime in with info about what clients they use on Linux, etc.

But have you tried searching for where quake is actually downloading the maps to?  If you can determine whatever directory the downloaded maps are going to, I'd think you could then just copy the files you retrieved from tastyspleen into the place where your downloads are going?

Note that the maps typically go under baseq2/maps, but there's also baseq2/env, baseq2/sound, baseq2/textures, etc.

From what you wrote it sounded like your downloads may be going into your $HOME/baseq2 ?

Regards,

whoa! the man himself!  :notworthy:

correct, downloads are going into $HOME/baseq2... i symlinked it to $HOME/.quake2/baseq2 (the real dir), never occured to me that quake may not follow symlinks  ::)

i'll try and report back

<<Edit>>

well, it worked, but it's still downloading everything for the /env folder  :mrdead:

oh well... at least that folder only takes a few minutes  :bigshades:

<<Edit 2>>

i eat my words... not working  :frustration:

Yeah me too. Then when it (eventually) finished downloading, it gave me an error because it couldn't overwrite the map I already had, but had to download again for some reason. So I had to quit, download from the site, and manually replace the map file. :(

I installed to ~/.quake2/baseq2 like the readme said

Whenever I download a map from the site I always extract the zipfile to my desktop (uncheck the 'Use folder names'-option) and then manually place it in "quake2/baseq2/maps."

The only reason I can think of for the redownloading of maps is that the files are not in the right folders. The autodownload is mod-dependend, so for instance when you're connecting to one of the Tourney servers and download a map, it will create the path: "quake2/tourney/maps". Now the map will only load in the tourney mod. To make it work on all servers it must be placed in "quake2/baseq2/maps".

I use teh stock 3.21 linux client and use the following dir structure
~/home/quake2
then in the quake2 dir the following dirs
baseq2
baseq2/maps
baseq2/env
baseq2/texture
baseq2/sound

I install all maps, envs, text etc into their respective directories.

I dont use symlinks or hidden (.) directories for quake2 or quake3

Mine plays fine and when I do run into a map etc that I dont have it D/Ls into the corresponding directory , Hope this helps

i eat my words... not working  :frustration:

Couple questions - did you use an RPM (or like binary) to install Q2
                                 - as what user did you install q2 and what user are you playing as?

If you used an RPM (or like binary)  where the files are going to go are dependent on the dir structure the binary maker used, but the program should still be able to figure out where to put the dloaded files.

If you installed as "root"  :ubershock: and are attempting play as "joenormaluser" the program will not have the "rights" to write the maps/etc to the baseq2 dir where you installed q2 and will instead put everything in your #HOME dir 'cause that's where it has perms to write to.

I have q2 installed in /usr/local/games/quake2 (I manually installed) with all the usual dirs (baseq2/etc)  below it with no problem on downloading 'cept having to dload new maps 'cause I don't play as much anymore... :)

Perhaps you could log in as "joenormaluser" and  * su - * (without the *) to install q2 then when you want to play you could do the same. X11 &  dir perms would follow then allowing the maps/env/sounds/etc to dload to the game's default locations..

Would that do it fanny??

i;m using the binary in Ubuntu 5.10 apt-get repos

i tried downloading the Loki torrent for the distro-nonspecific installer, and installed to $HOME/quake2  , then copied over all the maps, sounds, etc.

the performance is alot worse with the loki  ::) , and the map problem isn't solved. I think i may just be stuck letting them download, at least until they all do download  :humm:

i'll try compiling from cvs tonight, might make it work (or at least make the performance a bit better)  :frustration:

Yeah QD sounds like perm issues

The only issue I know of with installing q2 into a dir you dont have perms to is you have to set the quake2 executable to SUID which has its own issues. I guess you could set the perms for the quake2 and below dirs to allow you (the user) to own them then all the perms issues go away.

I assume you have installed the quake2.conf file into the /etc dir, the files contains the path to quake2 (/usrl/local/games/quake2) where ever you put it.

I install from source and move everything into my home dir to get around dealing with perms and SUID for root owned apps. I have used the .rpm from ftp.idsoftware.com with good success but again it requires you to set teh quake2 executable to SUID (7777) to work properly.

it's not the permissions... everything is installed in ~ with permissions set to read/write on everything, owned by my user  :uhoh:

it's mainly working now... it's downloaded most of the maps in railz, so that server works without a hitch now, and i'm still working on getting all of the ones in vanilla to download... i'll leave it in observer over the night  8)
