Peter Steele of Type O Negative dies at 48

NEW YORK – Peter Steele, the frontman and bassist for the heavy metal group Type O Negative, has died.
The announcement was posted on the band's Web site on Thursday. A statement from his family says he had been suffering from illness.
The 48-year-old Steele had been the leader of the Brooklyn-based band, which expressed dark themes with its music. He had battled substance abuse, but the band says he had triumphed over his addictions.
The band says in a statement that "Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music."
Steele had also made an appearance in the HBO series "Oz" and in the film "Bad Acid."
The band's Web site does not indicate where he died. It says funeral services will be private.

I got the chance to meet him briefly back in 1993 when I was hanging out with some friends on the campus of Georgia Tech. One of our friends Bob Vincent used to DJ a metal show on the Georgia Tech college radio on Friday nights. Type O Negative stopped by like a few bands occasionally would to promote whatever album they were touring for. That was around the time that Bloody Kisses was first released. It wasn't to much before that time that I had been turned on to the underground metal scene and had enjoyed the old Carnivore stuff, Peter Steele's earlier band. I remember when I first saw him thinking to myself, "HOLY SHIT, THAT'S THE LARGEST SCARIEST MAN I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY GOD DAMN LIFE!" He was pretty cool, even though I was probably just an annoying kid at the time. Like I said, it was a brief encounter, not like we hung out all night long drinking at a bar or anything, we were basically just sitting around the DJ booth bullshitting.
One thing's for sure, they're gonna need a BIG coffin.

No one else is a Peter Steele fan, huh? I wasn't too fond of the later Type O Negative stuff myself. I do have good memories of fun times spinning October Rust when me and my girlfriend were driving up through the Appalachian mountains on an old abandoned dirt road to where we used to go camping way out in the middle of nowhere. As soon as we'd turn off the paved highway onto the dirt road where we wouldn't have to worry about cops, we'd fire up my humongous glass 2 gram bowl and pop open some good expensive beers. It was about a 20 or 25 minute ride from the road back to our usual spot, plenty of time to get a good buzz on before arriving there and unloading all my grills and tables and tent and shit from the truck. It was a decent CD, the ambiance of that whole album went right along with mountain forest atmosphere. And besides, she didn't particularly care for the evil heavier stuff I usually listened to like Slayer or Cannibal Corpse.
Anywho, here's a few of my favorite Carnivore tunes.

I have a lot of friends that are Type O Negative fans. One of which was a huge fan and is particularly distraught. He's probably the only reason that I knew who this band was since I don't listen to much metal.
Always sad to see people go

Is that Jehar?
Jehar would have made the Type 0 Negative lyrics more kick ass.

Drove 30 miles thru 18 inches of snow to see them play in a 500 seat auditorium, estimated both snow and seating.
But it was a small venue, and they did a great show live. Great album names. Origin of the feces
I was always impressed by his awesome use of hardware having a chain for a strap, bass or regular I forget which he played.
oooh, it's in the picture... hehe didn't even notice
Heard he did a spread in playgirl
Original name of the band was Sub Zero
one of my favs.. loving the dead

Actual song title is "Black No. 1", from the album Bloody Kisses. I was less into them after October Rust. They strayed completely away from their faster harder Carnivore type stuff (like We Hate Everyone from Bloody Kisses) and only focused on slower gothy crap. Some of it was still pretty good, but rather boring. Last time I got to see them was with Ozzy and Sepultura or Pantera back in the late 90's. Don't remember jack shit about the show, I was very much under the influence of some stout psychadelics and in another dimension. I
was
going to see them back in 2003 with Lacuna Coil (who I can't stand), but they sold out of tickets before the show and weren't selling any at the door. Tried to find ANYONE in the parking lot selling tickets (as were a million other people) but all I could find was a crackhead dancing for change and a guy selling LSD.
