If nothin else, release a high res texture pak for quake2 :P that way when id shoots you down at least some one will enjoy your work

Yeah .
But i kinda doubt it if its possible to use a high-res textures simillar to what you (Dr.Corn) had shown us. If I'm not mistaken, its all in the Q2 graphic engine. But if it can be done, it sure would be "super cool".  8)

I'm pretty sure that EGL will handle any format up to some rediculous size. One of them can, like knightmare or q2max. I just can't remember which one. r1q2 has png support I believe.

Somebody who knows better can correct me as needed   ;)

Yep, it's possible in Q2 Evolved. The textures do look seriously odd and washed out though. Got to see how to get around that. Here's Q2 in full 16 million colors...

Thanks. I might release a texture pack just for q2dm1 just for people to try out. There's still a bit of work to be done on it before I'm comfortable releasing it. That tiled floor, after countless versions I've done, still needs to be reworked especially with regards to coloring and saturation. Then there's the wall texture on the RG-side outside area that I still need to do. I also have to redo the box textures by the SG by the corrodor to the lower RL. Then there's the grass and rock texture that I have to redo as well as the metal panel texture in the RG room/lower SG.

Thanks for the tip but if I got this correct, this works to your benefit as well as detriment. It does get rid of the really crappy orange ambience that I hate with a passion BUT it flattens out the lighting with an ambient white light instead. Looks somewhat reminiscent of software mode! It’s not quite a solution to the problem, remastering the maps with a good lighting modal would be the ultimate way to go and is what I plan to do eventually 
Anyway, here’s 2 screenshots of the 2 different settings that shows what I mean about flattened lighting. Note the light variance and shady areas in my settings…

Here's the kind of graphics I plan to achieve in the long run (before and after pics). Note that the models are not mine, they're from Generations Arena and are just an indication of how things might look eventually.

If there's a damn good programmer around who knows his stuff about id Tech 2 and 3 then I'd be interested in teaming together to make one hell of an improved Q2 experience with bump mapping, advanced UI, light blooms, bots, support for MD3, Q3 BSP's etc., combined with the hi-res textures and remastered maps all integrated into one massive mod.
