Weird problem

When I connect to some tastyspleen server a weird thing happens. I just tried it with this server tastyspleen.net:27917 and it did it. When I connect to the server it connects me as Laurelin and it puts my cl_maxfps to 2000 therefore it's making my q2 all choppy.

I seriously don't understand why it does that...it's not like I'm using Laurelin's config and I forgot to change his name in there. Anyway it's been doing that a couple times and I really can't understand why. Someone else have seen this problem before?

I can't imagine how that could happen, unless there's some stray .cfg file somewhere in your baseq2 directory that you've overlooked?  Are you absolutely positively sure there's no .cfg file anywhere in your quake2 folders that might have "Laurelin" in it?

Which client are you using?  (i.e. r1q2, q2a, NoCheat, etc.)

I'm still using nocheat cuz I never bothered to change anything. My config is and has been the same for a couple years. I can't understand why it's making me connect as Laurelin...I didn't even know him prior to the first tourney here. And why has this started only recently?

Anyway I'll check my config again but I would be the first one surprised if it says Laurelin there.

I also had a strange experience on the rail server. I was at my friends house adding the tastyspleen servers for him to GS. He's using NC 2.40 and was playing when the console said to get rid of the hacks. We didnt notice it right away so console said it again. Apparently it was showing his player saying: MZ/penix.exe or something similar. While talking to console it said it again whithout any keys being hit on his part. He left the server and I checked his cfg's (all of them) for a reference to penix.exe. There was no reference to it and nothing on his PC with that name. I thought he was being stuffed that line. What could cause this?

That is a wallhack I believe. It would be in his q2 folder somewhere or he wouldnt respond to it.

I searched his PC for all ref. to that name and the MZ in front of it. There was nothing there. So how did it try to exec it? He's not computer literate so I know he didnt install anything much less know how to use it! I ran the game from Gamespy using nocheat.exe and plain cfg.  Reconnected after looking over the pc and nothing came up again. It was the only game that happened. I tried to google that name also but only came up with some german stuff that I couldnt read.  So what gives?

MZ is not what your looking for just the penix.exe    MZ shows up in front of any hack that is detected.Thats what Ive seen from watching people get busted so many times.

Actually, the name the client prints out is usually NOT the name of the actual file in question.  We don't have control over that, but it can be confusing.

Try looking for a file called "q2hax.exe" anywhere in his Quake2 or baseq2 folder.  That might be it.

Except that, as mentioned above, the filename that prints out is not necessarily telling you what file to look for.  Best to check for any non-standard .exe's and .dll's in your Quake2 folder.
