Is that "Send to Database" page related?

The direct link is
http://www.chesterfieldstudents.co.uk/200910/FdSc2/oldgreggg/Testsite/form.htm

Can you post the source to that. I wonder if there is a difference in the connection object that you declared at the top. I can only see the client side of it right now so I can't tell what is happening behind the scenes.

tom says it isnt related, I know one thing and that's that we have the input form complete EXCEPT the date, we're having an issue getting the 3 part date drop down menu to go into the database as one, but the data in the database I showed ya / we're using for the view recent 10 entries, is already preinputted test data. nevertheless here's the source

I think this is it anyway, tom orders things horribly and I can't even tell lol.

the above doesent work though btw :P as im sure you already know, and we keep getting the same error even with SELECT txtDate FROM users, Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal.

could it be a declaring issue? like I noticed our input form has Dim and then declares all the things in the asp script, so I just wrote this;

<%

   Dim txtDate, strSQL, objRS, objConn, dbpath

Set objRs=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")
Set objConn=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
dbpath=server.mappath("products.mdb")
objConn.Open "Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ="&dbpath&";"

strSQL = "SELECT txtDate FROM users"

objRs.Open strSQL, objConn
%>

getting tom to try it but could I be on the right path, even if it doesent work?

Lol, doing the dim thing brought this shit up; Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]General error Unable to open registry key 'Temporary (volatile) Jet DSN for process 0x16b4 Thread 0x2614 DBC 0xc4a0024 Jet'.

/200910/FdSc2/oldgreggg/Testsite/R/view.asp, line 9

and apparently it does this because: The account that is being used to access the page does not have access to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ODBC registry key.

>_>

I also noticed that your connection strings are quite different in both examples:

The current example:
Code: [Select]
dbpath=server.mappath("products.mdb")
objConn.Open "Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ="&dbpath&";"

The "Send to Database" form:
Code: [Select]
data_source = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source=" & _
            Server.MapPath("form.mdb")

Another thing that I saw is that your sql statment is never really executed, it is opened:

Code: [Select]
strSQL="SELECT txtDate FROM users"
objRs.Open strSQL, objConn

Shouldn't this be something like:
Code: [Select]
objConn.Open data_source
objConn.Execute strSQL
objConn.Close

EDIT***

In fact on further inspection you create 2 connection objects, objRs for a recordset and objConn for a DB connect. Is this how a record set is filled?
Code: [Select]
objRs.Open strSQL, objConn

Dimming only matters if you have your project set on strict datatypes. If that is the case then you probably have to dim each object as their class. That was not the case in the "Send to Database" so I doubt that this is an issue.

However the error about privileges sounds like a problem. You may have to go into your windows admin tools and give the generic web process some admin rights.

bleh tbh i'm getting lost now, remember the send to database form doesen't actually work if you mean the date one.

as for closing it you're probably right, but the objrs.open strsql, objconn is quoted in a similar fashion on a tutorial site so I think that part is right, i just don't know how to close it without breaking it lol. what's baffling me is how it works fine, when you select * from users and displays all 5 records without any issue, but as soon as you change it to txtDate it says

ADODB.Recordset error '800a0cc1'

Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal.

/200910/FdSc2/Adamc/retrieve/product.asp, line 81

every damn time.

Aha! Some sort of progress! I noticed it kept referring line 82, which was a part of the table. I ripped that table out and tried a SELECT STAFF FROM USERS, with a new simpler and lol broken table just to show STAFF lo and behold it worked. so I changed to to txtDate and did SELECT txtDate FROM USERS and lo and behold: http://www.chesterfieldstudents.co.uk/200910/FdSc2/Adamc/retrieve/product.asp

the dates are shown!

alrighty, new problem entirely ;P I've even got it to do the TOP 10 now working. http://www.chesterfieldstudents.co.uk/200910/FdSc2/Adamc/retrieve/product.asp - however, it's just the top 10 in the database, not the top 10 most recent entered. aiiiiii wtf :(

Cool...!

Now that you've got it working, I'd like to invite John McCarthy to say a few words to Microsoft about ASP/VBScript.

Thanks John! :notworthy:

Chances are that the assignment wants you to hook up an object to a recordset and make the control do all of these things for you. Basically it's the same as creating a form in Access, you just have to set up the connections manually after you create the form objects.

If that is not the case then you can go for the easier solution. Create a text box and generate sql statements based on that data.

Something like

Code: [Select]
SQLStatement = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE student = \'" myTextbox.text "\';";

The basic idea is you take the user input from the web browser, and pass it to the web server.  Once the input is passed to your script on the web server, it (your script, .NET code/whatever) can take that input and pass it to SQL statements.  The SQL statements output is part of generated HTML that passed back to the browser.

The HTML that takes the input is part of forms, the HTTP method is usually POST to send the data, and the web server is setup to pass the values to your scripts.  You might want to keep in mind that Access would not be good for the web, but just about every other choice would be fine.  If the Database gets over 16MB or so, it will probably start running into serious issues.

I'd have to say even though .NET may be nice because it manages memory, can run multiple programming languages (even PHP possibly in the future), is portable, has a bunch of web related functions, I  would choose PHP and MySQL.  It's simply more abstract when troubleshooting and more complicated.  Of course there is something to be said for all the nice sites built on .NET, but it's just not my cup of tea.
