Teleport between servers?

As I'm looking forward to playing once again I'm thinking of new maps and things to put in maps. Just a thought but wouldn't it be possible to put a teleport pad in a map that could tele you to a different server? I know the map would have to load and all that but putting it behind a wall clearly marking it "railz" or whatever server its destination was would be fun. I know what your gonna say why not just type in goto vanilla or whatever. I just wanna do it to do it. Get tired of losing shoot the wall enter the tele and bam your in xatrix. Like I said just a thought.  :righteous:

another spin:
Do something like the start level of Quake I... all it would need is the ability to execute console commands from a trigger on the map.

connect tastyspleen.net   takes you to a mall of quake2 servers, could even have nifty elevators and music !! Party Elevator!!!

Q2 LOX has had offworld teleports since 2006. We've used them for scheduling swarms. The players need only connect/reconnect with the server and follow each other into the teleport pads that targeted other servers. It was fun.  We have not used it very much lately. I used the standard teleporter pads but allow them to rotate so they are visually different than the standard pads, surrounded them with a trigger that splashes the target name and IP when you get close to the pad.

One concept I wanted to explore was coupling servers so player information could be communicated between servers, allowing scores and status to be retained. It might be interesting to have two or more servers running different maps and have players dodge and evade between servers with off-world pads.

That sounds even better than my idea glad its possible. Now I just need to make a map with a lot of those teleporters in it. Actually probly like 3 or 4 maps to put on different servers to run simotaniously.

This was my first impression of what TastySpleen was way back before i ever joined the server.  i remember Dafremen>FAS> or someone in LaG telling me about a server that allows you to travel between individual servers, and that was my mental picture of it.   i was actually let down when i realized it was text commands (incredibly ignorant, as just GOTO makes life worth living!)  But i instantly had visualized teleports transporting clients server to server.  i loved the idea of chasing someone from different type of server to different type of server/mod.

That Q1 start map type idea freaking rocks too.  it would create its own sense of place, it would be the TastySpleen Virtual reality/lobby.  I'd suggest nothing but 'nades there. :) :)

Gotta come back to the spleen with a bang right?
 Anyways as soon as I get a place I'm gonna start working on four maps that are totally different but have tele's that are interconnected. Like I said with a little help from console hopefully we can start all the maps at once on four different servers. We will have to have a kinda limit on how soon after you arrive on one server how soon you can goto another or I see a nightmare in traffic and wait times. Any suggestions on the four maps and or servers to do this on will be great. And of course from console we would need a logistic go.

We use LOX's built-in entfile override or r1q2's override file feature to add these, no real need for special maps since servers can change IPs or disappear, making a map obsolete. Keeping them in an override allows for easy changes without map CRC problems and allows them to be added to any map on the system. The entity looks like this (this one works with carena.bsp):

This module can be easily added to any other mod whos source code still exists. Installation per the comments. Modifications, suggestions always welcome. The code was also intended to support teleportation into other games but we never implemented it.

There's never a timing issue jumping into a server from a teleport because the target server sees a new client connecting and manages it accordingly.  Players would spawn randomly on ordinary spawn pads, huge swarms would create some problems for smaller maps with fewer pads but spawnbubble kills would prevail until the client limit was reached.

I like the hub idea, where people could hang out and chat, jump around, show off their player models, etc..

To extend the idea further just for conversation sake, you could have a tourney ladder which spans multiple servers.  You win you go "up" one server and the guy who lost on that server above would come "down" -- with some timing and logic it would be an instant ladder.

I think that the hub would be awesome, especially if we overrode hub.bsp for it. Since it would be a little chat area and not designed for actual fighting, we could add some crazy features to it. Things like the gameshow q2 mod, or jump mod, or even QPong that has sections reserved for spectators to walk around in that are separate from the actual game area.

I've always wanted to get a bunch of servers going that hosted every single SP map individually. If you hit the exit it would just teleport to the next server. Or even a quake2 style second life in which there are some rather large static areas held on different servers and it's pretty much either an MMORPG or some kind of MMO style game.

I think Q2 Cafe should open a coffee shop on this start level hub.... since so many people do infact like to connect and just talk and drink coffee.  :)

Yes, we've used them a few times. The only downside is the custom download but they d/l fairly fast. I like the door numbers. Now you can tell players to use a particular door, reduces confusion. Much better than "follow me" or "this way" in a crowd. X7's map is nice because he isolated the off-world pads in the rooms so they are exit-like. The target servers can be modified by using modified entdump overrides on r1q2 servers.
