Windows 7

A few here are already using it and I'm probably going to get it - but have a few questions.

First, what is the difference between an "upgrade" versus "full version". Who would own a PC without an existing operating system?

Second, there are 3 versions. The Home version would seem to be all I'd need. And I think (not sure though) that they all have the virtual WinXP OS within, to run older applications not compatible with Win 7.

Upgrades only apply from certain versions of Vista, to certain corresponding versions of Win 7.




Myself, I'm currently running XP Pro 32 bit.  When I at some point switch to Win 7, I'll be going 64-bit instead.  Either "Pro" or "Ultimate", not sure yet.

The chart about covers it, as well as it can be covered in less than 2000 words.

If you don't have a recent Vista system you can expect to have to backup your data and applications and then format your hard drive before or duing the Windows 7 installation. Kinda nice to have a clean install to start from but in my case I will be getting a new computer with Win7 on it, hopefully before this computer fails.

I would, in fact I prefer it that way.  If they sold computers in major stores without OS's preinstalled I'd love it, but I have no problem just putting my own system together.

The workstations should come with Hyper-V, and then you can snapshot your system and restore it with a couple clicks. 

Plus you will still have the host system to mess around with, that seems better than system restore and recovery partitions.

It would also be easier to use Linux : ).

As for putting your own system together, the more money you spend the better off you'll be ;p

I like the look of that Desktop. It exudes functionality and more biased to Users, rather than eye candy for novices.

However I did find out that the Virtual WinXP OS is not available in the Home edition. Might be problematic for running older apps, but I've managed to convince my Vista laptop to run everything I have in older applications - save some really old Windows 3.1 games. Even they will run but display too small, or have a minor bug.

Hmm, well I've had zero compatability issues save one, where I couldn't run some minor program forgot which one it was and all I had to do was (or rather, windows automatically asked) if I wanted to run it XP mode and voila worked all gravy, then it saves the setting for you so it always runs in XP mode. (I am running professional edition tho) love it! I really love the way you plug something in and windows automatically finds drivers for it within seconds and it's up and running straight away, the interface I find better and better all the time and the speed as well, alright its a fresh install but nevertheless it wasn't this quick with XP, I guess that has to do with going from 32 bit xp with 2gb of ram to 64bit 7 with 4gb though.

Believe it or not, that was the only feature for vista that I have good things to say about. Except that I don't have ALL good things to say about it. When it didn't work, getting drivers was literally WORSE than it was in windows 98.

So if the same feature exists in 7 (and has been improved upon) then

certainly accustomed to win7 now and can honestly say i'll never go back to XP. this os is simply fantastic and better than XP, and then some!
