nice pak! I love the sounds. Especially the hyper. The rocket and ssg sound is the same for me. Is that on purpose or just the way it was for q1?
Only played the q1 demo back when it came out.

I like the new weapons sounds! And the conback!

Couldn't hear the new player's sounds (the "sound issues" you talk about in the readme file.)
I moved the files, inside the pak, from \sound\player\male to \players\male\ and it works.

Any reason why you didn't do that instead?

Dude!  Well done man.  I always especially loved the NIN ammo packs since Nine Inch Nails ruled the soundtracks of that game.  I still love listening to the Quake 1 CD in my cd player to this day.  Can't wait to try it out this weekend.  Right now I have to get my ass in gear and get ready for a dinner date tonight  :headbang:

When I first tested it out, I realized that the original Q2 rocket reload sound was still playing every time I'd fire a rocket. Unless I forgot to go back and do it, I'm pretty sure I stuck in a null sound (sound file with the volume all the way down) to eliminate it and make it sound just like the one from Q1. The SSG may sound very similar to the one from stock Q2, but it's not the same one. From what I can tell, when they put out Q2, they probably used some of the same sounds, just at a higher sampling rate for better quality audio. The biggest thing I noticed was that the male player jumping sound sounded exactly same for Q2, just a higher sampling rate. All the sounds used in Q1 were at 11.025kHz 8bit mono, whereas all the sounds in Q2 are 22.050kHz 16bit mono.

The shells and bullets (nails) ammo icons aren't the exact same ones from Q1. I found some pictures of hi-res ammo pack models from some kind of newer Q1 add-on/mod/whatever that I shrunk down and used. I ended up having to use Gimp to tweak the brightness and contrast on the nails, the original pic was pretty dark and didn't show much detail on the ammo box once I shrunk it down.

Not only the soundtrack, I understood Reznor was responsible for for every sound you hear in-game as well.

Agreed, it's a blast.  Not sure if it's just nostalgia, or what, but the Q1 sounds always had a bit more of a visceral quality to my ear.  A little more raw and harsh and over-the-top, but in a fun way.

In fact, that sent me in search of the PAK file from "Quake 1 Test" (QUAKETST\ID1.PAK).  Because I remembered some of the QUAKETST sounds being even more extreme.

Much to my surprise, I found the QUAKETST pak contains hi-res sound samples!  Before they were downsampled for the official Q1 release.

So, below, I have attached a "pak11-hires-q1-sounds.pak".  This does not change any sounds from focalor's pak.  It merely subtitutes whatever hi-res versions of those sounds that were present in the QUAKETST pak.  So it is meant as an addendum to focalor's pak.  If you have focalor's pak as pak10.pak, this one would be pak11.pak.

Separately, I've attached "ID1-sounds-only.pak" which is all the sounds from the QUAKETST pak.  They are not named in a way that works for Quake2.  I just provided it in case anyone wants to check them out... a lot of them are pretty cool, but there are also some goofy ones.

One of my favorites is sound/halo/hurt/plyrht19.wav ... That was hilarious in QUAKETST, I think it was played when you'd fall from a great height... either that or when you took a lot of damage and were near death.  It was too funny to be fragging co-workers on the LAN and hear that goofy scream.

Edit: forgot to mention: In Q2, set s_khz "44" for the full effect.

Update: Turns out several of the high-res sounds were quiet, so I normalized them to bring up the volume.

Updated .pak is attached.

(Also I included the QUAKETST pain and death sounds in sound/player/male and sound/player/female.  You won't hear these if you have the pain*.wav and death*.wav sounds directly in your baseq2/players/male and baseq2/players/female folder.  If you move those out of the way, then you'll hear the sounds from the .pak.  The QUAKETST sounds are pretty over-the-top, but fun. :))


NOTE: reminder, this pak is meant to be used in conjunction with focalor's quake1 pak; this add-on only provides hi-res sounds.

Mask informed me that I yet again neglected to get the folder names correct for the player sounds so they may not be working properly, I can't remember if I fixed that, I doubt it.

I figured there had to be some high quality versions of these same sounds floating around somewhere since I'm pretty sure Trent Reznor was actually the one who made them all. I appreciate the work of renaming these and putting them into a file. I'll take a listen to them soon, perhaps I'll even go through the non-Q2 pak and rename a few you might have missed.

NOTICE/UPDATE:

For copyright reasons, I have removed this pak from the web. It's obviously been years since I compiled this pak, but from what I remember, all of the sounds and most of the images contained it were ripped directly from the original Quake1 game, which would make it, let's say, less than 100% legal to post on the web for public consumption.

Quadz, for your own sake, I'd highly recommend removing any of the paks and files you attached to any of your posts in this thread if they are copyrighted.

I deleted the downloadable zip file containing the pak from my TS page. I'm not sure if the pak had all the fixes discussed in this thread applied to it to make it work properly. Honestly, I don't really care enough to check. But if anyone ever sees this thread and this post and would like to obtain a copy of this, you can PM me here on the forums or email me and then maybe by pure coincidence you will later have someone (not me, because that would be copyright infringement) email you a pak that closely resembles something kinda-sorta almost just like the one mentioned in this thread (but obviously not the same one, because that would be wrong.).
