money
« on: August 30, 2009, 12:05:19 PM »
What is your opinion about money? is it important? how much exactly do you value it? are you careless with your money? would you like to be less/more careful with your money? What do you use money for, aside from the essentials for living?

Personally, I don't give a **** about money. Aside from the obvious things one has to spend money on, I work a full-time job so I can do fun things. I said this earlier today "the only thing money is good for is that you can trade it in for newcastle". I've always worked a shitload my entire life, I've had around 10 jobs and I'm only 21. I used to come home with a wad of tips after bar tending and just throw it on my dresser and a 50 will fall down the crack against the wall that i'll never find and never even realize I lost. Aside from that being 36 potential newcastles I could have drank at the time, I don't care about it in the least. I do keep better track of my cash than that currently, but my attitude still remains the same. The only purpose of money to me is good times with my girl and a buzz, aside from the essentials. And if I lose some, oh well, I'll just castnet some bait fish and sell it with my commercial fishing license.

There are so many people that are uptight with their cash, then there's even more dirty little thieves out there that you can't leave alone around any possession you care about, especially money. Problem is I don't care about money, so my solution has been to disassociate myself from all thieves (75% of American population) instead. Screw thieves and money.........And yeah, it's good to have goals that involve money, but people need to lighten up.

I think it's shame that y'all don't love your money. Mail it to me, it'll have a good home here and I'll make sure it gets lots of love.

absolute rubbish laddie! get on with your work

as for the topic,...

I was like you. I use to toss my money around, spend it all at bars or on weed, food, rest went to a rent/utilities, wouldnt have a penny saved at the end of the year

now I have to be more careful with my money, new home, constant work being done on it, bills, bills, bills... while I make enough to control the spending, i have no room for error, else I get set back on all the work to be done on my home. got a wedding coming up... more shit to spend money on. ehh cool assets, life has 'kicked' in.. but yeah. i once had the attitude of money being worthless, but now it's essential, cant lose any in the cracks

See, ole Jager ain't no dummy. People who say that money isn't everything have obviously never experienced what it's like to not have enough.

Like Jager said, I used to be the same way. I used to toss it around like it was nothing. Slowly but surely and little by little, I ended up spending more than I was making. I always said, "Oh well, next paycheck I'll start saving more and building it back up." At first, I had enough to pay the bills and still had plenty in the bank. Eventually, through lots of partying and "living life to the fullest", it got to the point where I had just enough saved to pay the bills when they came due and only had next to nothing left over. I got by like that for a while.... and then the shit hit the fan. I got into some trouble with the law and then lost my job. I ended up spending the little bit of money that was being saved to bail myself out of jail in hopes of being able to make it to work on Monday and save my job. That didn't happen though, because I didn't have enough to get my vehicle out of impound until Monday morning. So I ended up getting fired anyway. I had to bust ass to find another job quickly. I had to sweet talk my probation officer into allowing me a little bit of time to get up enough money to start paying fines. That really sucks, having someone telling you, "You need to have a job to make X amount of dollars to pay me by this date, or I'll send you back to jail." If you're in jail, you obviously can't have a job and make money. While you're in jail, bills don't stop. You still have to make car payments and rent payments and insurance and everything else. If you go back to jail, you get fucked even MORE, because you miss truck payments and they repossess your truck. You can't make rent payments, so they evict you and toss all your shit on the sidewalk where everyone can steal whatever they want. Thinking about shit like that isn't exactly conducive to a stress-free state of mind.

Anyway, a hard lesson learned. But now, money is #1. Therefore, your job is priority #1, because without a job and income, you can't eat or have a place to live or a means of personal transportation. Your family isn't going survive on your love and affection alone, it takes having food to eat to keep from dying. While family is very important, you can't have a family without money. So family is #2. Everything else (personal problems, toys, having fun, etc) is #3. Now if your family is in desperate need of your presence, you should be there, but if it's going to cost you your job/income and bring about a situation where your income might STOP and subsequently cause bills to not be paid (which is counterproductive for the sake of your family), then unfortunately sometimes you just have to be a man, suck it up, go to work, and do the best you can.

I average putting $200 into savings a week. The other day I had about 900$ in my possession...I put 400$ into savings $150 to pay off some random shit and 335$ for 3 nights at this place: www.affinia.com/Liaison (off topic... click the main graphic.... hotel is nice!!)

I manage money decently for my age but I just mean I don't hold it in a high regard like many seem to. If I lose out on money somehow I'm never pissed about it. Unless someone rips me off, I get really damn pissed. but even if that's the case, I always eventually take blame for it myself for even dealing with someone who could potentially do that.

It's all been said already in this thread. You get a great appreciation for money when you realise you have none and the bills start looming up out of the booze, bud, and dining out haze. Before I met my wife I was doing construction trying to get cash together to pay my rent on time. Forget the utilities, I just wanted a roof, err, basement suite bulkhead over me. She taught me how to manage my money and how to say no to impulse purchases.

Looking forward now we went and got pre-approved for a 500k mortgage over 30ys just to see where we sat with our pooled credit/assets. We just moved to a new condo that we are renting and will start saving for our downpayment on a house. I used to shy from this topic bc i was ignorant to my own lack of financial vision and security.

For those who are at a young age... Start saving now. You'd be suprised how much you can actually bank away when you are young and a hard worker. You can easily put away a few thousand a year if you treat every purchase like an investment. Weigh it out and see if you really need it or if it,s an impulse purchase by giving it a couple days of thought.

AND LEARN HOW TO COOK AT HOME!!!

AND LEARN HOW TO COOK AT HOME!!!

Definitely. Eating out usually costs more than a home cooked meal.

On the topic of impulse buys...

You'd be flabbergasted at how much you probably spent on stupid shit in one year if you actually kept accurate track of where that money went. All the times you stop at a gas station to fill up the tank or for a pack of smokes... and you always buy a drink, perhaps a snack too. It seems like pocket change at the time, just a dollar and some change for a drink, maybe a dollar or two for a snack. But over a year, that can come out to upwards of one thousand dollars that you could've held on to in order to pay off debts or that could've been saved towards some awesome toy you really want but can never find the money for. You could simply buy some canned soft drinks at the grocery store and keep a cooler in the car for those times when you get thirsty in traffic. Or if you really thought about it, you probably didn't need that drink and snack at all, it was just something to keep your mind occupied while waiting for the rush hour traffic on the expressway to inch along.

You guys make more money than me and have families. I have a girlfriend that doesn't live with me. Although I think proportional to the situation I know the value of money.

12k in loans, 5.6k in federal drinking tickets, 4 semesters of college, living expenses........... all in the past 1.5 years. It's not like I could live off of unemployment like every other person I know during the winter time... I won't bother to mention all the things that are barely less than 1k. It's not a whole lot, but I'm 21.

yes i live down the way from my mom and yes I eat for free a lot. but whatever, she's my mom, and most of the time I cook for her (yes sigma..... i can cook. i've been the head cook of a popular restaurant before..among many other jobs:bar tending, waiting tables, commercial fishing, mating on offshore fishing charters, management positions, housing and residential life staff position at a big university..) Sometimes i'm lucky and she brings me dinner, it's pretty awesome.

Anyway jager, I have more bills than that. I used that week as an example because the point I was addressing with had to do with me saving my money. That paycheck I put away a decent amount (for me) and still had money to book a trip as well.

I don't think appreciation or realization is the issue here. I just don't give a fuck about money.... i'm actually looking forward to "the real world" aka settling into a profession. Chances are it will be way easier than what I'm doing now. (currently i manage/open a motel / marina at 4am in the morning 5 days a week. On my 2 days off, I have class from 9am-9:50p, and the knew university I go to is a 2.5 hour drive. So I get home past midnight then open up again in a few hours.. right now i'm on a 17 hour schedule(school))

I also grew up without any money at all(just saying it so no one assumes otherwise) my brother and I are the first 2 from either side of our family, no matter how far you go back, to go to college. 'without any' is an understatement too. So yeah focalor, your wrong lol. I mean by saying this: "People who say that money isn't everything have obviously never experienced what it's like to not have enough." I laughed at this assumption kinda man... No presents on my birthday and for the holidays was completely normal for me. I am far from spoiled. I've never had a thing given to me. And yes, 1 year and a half ago, I was eating absolutely nothing but canned tuna, ramen, and canned green beans... all on special. There's a lot more, but that's not the aim of this thread and I don't like conversation about it to begin with. Just take my word for it, that's not the case.

Money is gay.

Money is awesome.  I love working all week to have like 10 bucks after working all week, it's great.

 :lolsign:

And while we're at it, I think the government should take more.  Lots of people are making 75k an hour doing nothing at imaginary jobs.

I love the look on peoples faces when I walk out of a store, throw my change in the air while shouting "I'm rich, BITCH!!!"  :bigshades:

When its just you, you can be free and easy with the cash.

When you have a wife and kids who you provide for then you think of it a little different.  I don't obsess over money, but those essentials are a bigger part of your pay than what they used to be.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
