Q2 spawn rapage

One of the common complaints with q2 is that when you spawn, you're completely defenseless. Anybody who thinks the blaster is an adequate spawn weapon is either loony or really fucking good with the blaster.

So what are your thoughts? You don't really see a lot of "conversion frags" on q2 due to the time needed off the spawn to grab a weapon (albiet not a problem on most maps), but is that really an issue?

Or is q2 just geared towards the need to find a weapon off the spawn pad?

Of course, an experiment could be spawning in duels with MG and 30-40 bullets. Leaving this open to discussion.

Even I, who suck at duels and can't ever get into the Megaroom on q2dm1 without getting rocketed, chainguned, or otherwise disintgrated, can usually get a weapon like the SSG, MG, lower RL, or HB to at least put up a fight, no matter how good the other player is. I say leave spawning with the blaster alone.

BTW, if you really want to spawn with stuff, you ought to play ra2 or something like that .

Doesn't q3 spawn you with machine gun?

Doesn't bother me spawning with blaster,  or getting into a blaster war.
or even blastering that guy with something better who was there when I spawned.
Blaster kills feel good,  and still feels good even to get a few blaster hits in b4 you die.

On spawn raping,  xrazy, not sure about xatrix, but xrazy has spawn farthest on.
Usually not an issue,  but if you get in the right spot right map with rail you can hit the same spawn
over and over.  Had 2 maps in a row with close to 100 kills like that. 
One map was really bad,  had that kind of setup with 20 rails in the location as well

i love using the blaster.  i love spawning with someone with rail or rocket launcher right there and having a nice battle dodging their shots and landing seven or so shots on them.  If i run out of ammo, i never run, i love moving to the blaster.  Those kills are worth much more then one frag to me.    Especially vs. Rocket Launcher.  It is the blaster vs. SuperShotgun battles i have the trouble with.

Isn't the goal behind duels to have complete spawn control? I think changing the weapon you start with would completely change the game... if you want equal footing then play RA2.

I, For one, love my blaster...walk in against someone with a rail, going "pew, pew, pew" then pwn!!  Good times!

Well, it does make for some good documentation that proves that Q2 players love the blaster. I've always found it strange however in reading articles that point out that q2 is dominated by the chain\rg... I figure that's true if all you play is DM1, but really, we should be moving on from there by now.

Propose a Quake 2 Mod called Gun Game:

• All players spawn with the blaster
• When you get a kill, you upgrade to a higher weapon.  Blaster -> shotgun -> ...etc.. BFG --> then back down to --> Blaster
• When you get blastered, you downgrade to a lower weapon
• All players instantly respawn after being killed
• Player to complete the cycle wins

What a fun game that must have been.  One of the best players in the game popping you off the pad over and over.   What a fucking hero.  BTF are awesome.

Don't blame the map, BTF.  You CHOOSE to play like that.  Nobody forces you to play like an ass.

I find that most players will CONSIDERATELY not frag you off the pad.  Most players don't have this pathological need for frags to this extent.  Spawn raping has got to be one of the cheapest tactics in the game, especially annoying when the player doing it has the skill and the power to make it an interesting and fun game.  I will never understand how somebody would want to play like this.

Ahh, for my part,  I am not holy, nor pure.  I WILL take the occasional spawn frag, or typing kill, just for grins.  The difference is if you play a situation or a map* and just nail spawnners over and over.   It's a part of the game, everyone's dark little secret.

(* Especially with spawn farthest turned on, which is always a BAD idea, since it removes the random nature from spawnning.  Even if this does not result in a spawn-camp-kill situation, a good player will always know where his victim re-spawns... again, NEVER a good idea for a clean game.)

Finally, when I do take a cheap-ass frag, I will usually counter it with something stupid, like stand in an open area and type out a lengthy bit o' philosophy, or only use handgrenades or, yes, the  blaster, for the next kill.

But this is from someone who has no problem with camping in general - it's part of the game, the strategy of noobs.  Might be good for one kill, but after I know your position, well... let's just say that's why Makron created handgrenades in all his infinite wisdom.

I don't blame the map, I blame a server setting.
I never feel sorry for shooting someone in q2,  unless they were just standing still/facing a wall etc.

I forget the other guys name,  but he was having fun with it.
Laughing at one point. 
Spawn protection did its job, he got off the pad enough and made me chase him down.
Those times made him laugh and joke even more.
