Ummmmm.... Not to beat you up too much, but it is clear that your Quake II executable was NOT crashing. According to that screenshot, you were on the server for longer than anybody else, thus precluding a crash. Also, you apparently don't have 350-400 ping, you have, in that screenshot, 320 ping. Normally, you have about a 250 ping, which really isn't that big of an issue. I have played with numerous different pings, and it really doesn't make much difference, as long as you have <300 ping and can understand how much to lead with such-and-such a ping. I guess if you don't understand how ping affects weapon aiming, it does become very difficult to play with a ping higher than about 70. Hope you don't take this too personally and make some stupid .gif like you did to |iR|Dervish.

What probably made her have an easier time leading her shots that game were the players she was playing against. None of those people seem to have good movement against good railers.

And you make it sound easier to rail with her ping then it actually is. At that ping, you almost never get the first shot, which potentially means you don't have much time at all to figure out how much lead you need, if you can't easily predict your opponent's movement. Also it gets too random guessing what the lead should be, against players who like to strafe dodge like crazy and do fakes.

Ping is everything.

When someone can strafe jump like a mexican jumping bean and circle strafe in weird ways, it becomes increasingly difficult to predict where the opponents position WILL BE as your ping increases. While you may think that a 150 ping is no big deal, it's obviously because you've been playing FFA against people who don't know how to either:
a.) enact some defensive footwork.
or
b.) they are busy focusing on fighting someone else and haven't seen you or aren't focusing much on using defensive movement against YOU while they are busy facing the other player and working on THEM.

I think that skill is why I tend to do a lot better in crowded FFA matches rather than 3 player FFA or 1v1. You have to have a natural knack for picking good targets when there are multiple players in an area. Try to move into a triangular position in regards to the other two players so that you can flank one of them. Chances are that the person you decide to flank are going to be focusing more on dodging side-to-side rather than front-to-back, which keeps them in a much tighter area and easier to hit. If you happen to form a fight in a straight line with two other players (one guy in the middle, and one on each end) then that is a little more dangerous especially if that person is using a hitscan weapon like a chaingun. You'll both still be working the guy in the middle the hardest, but this also makes it easier for the guy on the other end to begin aiming at YOU once the monkey in the middle finally goes down.

Obviously, if you're caught in the middle, RUN LIKE HELL! Try to move into a position that influences the 1st opponent to begin fighting with the guy that just showed up, we'll call him guy number 3, YOU being #2. If you can successfully cause this to happen, then begin flanking the 3rd guy. When flanking in such a way, it's usually best to use some type of weapon with a steady firing rate as opposed to something with a reload time. As the 1st guy is shooting him, he's helping you work his health down. With a steady firing weapon, you're more likely to be the one who inflicts the final fatal shot and collect the frag. But then again, if you're flanking someone and their movement seems to be more confined than if you were to face them head-on, you will have a better chance of hitting them with a rocket launcher or railgun, so don't do some stupid shit like switch to a machinegun when you know damn well you have 8 rockets in your inventory.

As I have said before, the only difference ping really makes is how much you have to lead. In a duel, which is where I think you are coming from, Barton, having a significantly worse ping might be an issue. But the Swedish team certainly did quite well with far worse pings than the American clans did. And I can rail players easily with up to 250 ping. Beyond that, it becomes a more difficult to rail.

But then again, I am a railer and grenade-launcher user when I play DM, so snap predictions come naturally to me. I don't spam with the GL, I actually use it as an offensive weapon to bomb players, so predicting movement with a high ping isn't really hard for me.

Normally though, I play on a Lithium server where I ping almost the highest (with the exception of one person whose ping is nearly 200). With all the hookers flying around faster than rockets normally travel (1250 units of speed!), zipping off the sky, and generally staying away from walls and the floor, you have to have really good prediction skills to even hit them. And since that was where I started playing Quake II, I developed decent prediction skills quickly. Oh well, maybe I’m too harsh on people for whining about ping.

You shouldn't be disappointed. He seems to have been experiencing a lot of different changes with his connection over the past year, sometimes being at his regular old 70-ish, sometimes as low as 40-50's. I don't know if his aim is slacked off recently or I'm just improving, but I definitely don't have as hard of a time against him as I used to. You seem to have improved significantly yourself. As I was looking back through my screenshots, I saw a few where you finished with about 15 frags by the end of a map. You usually keep up with us regulars nowadays, sometimes even being a threat for the top spot... until Vigilante shows up. With a 10 ping and better than average aiming ability, he's damn near impossible to beat unless you get lucky as hell or have a similar ping advantage.

And like I said before, ping IS everything, period. While some people may think that ping isn't that big of a deal, in railz it's EVERYTHING. Every last millisecond of latency counts. I have a MUCH easier time hitting folks when my ping drops to 32 on rare occasions. If it were even lower, I'd only be exponentially more accurate. While ping does affect the distance you have to aim ahead of an opponent, it also affects the amount of time it takes for the gun to fire after you actually click to fire it. With a lower ping, you'll still have predict shots a lot, but you also have a better idea of WHEN to click fire to actually land those predicted shots. I've seen a few players who simply hold down the fire button constantly in order to have a steady firing rhythm that lets them accurately predict when the shot will occur.

To continue on that subject... Sometimes holding down fire is a good idea. There's been a few times where I've been going head to head with another person on the railz server. I fire first and miss, he fires just a split fraction of a second after me and misses, I release the fire button after the first shot, but before it has time to reload all the way, I re-press the fire button again and line up the shot perfectly... only to have the other guy getting a shot off first and killing me before I shoot... which pisses me off inevitably. That's just so not fair, that fucker fired out of turn! FIRE BUTTON HAX0RZ!!! Well the server calculates one shot at a time, and whoever happens to have the "right of way" as far as client input to the server, that guy gets first dibs on the shots. Like I said, only one shot is dealt with at a time, and it happens really fast so it almost impossible to really notice unless something like this occurs. This is why simultaneous 1v1 rail frags are impossible, the server only calculates one shot at a time, so whichever client connection manages to get the data packet to the server quicker... he gets the frag.

Well... slayer is right about one thing, it is easy for some to play on a higher ping and it's not 'everything' like focalor said. But although slayer is somewhat correct, it's not from the reasons he was suggesting, lol.... and slayer, saying that you don't spam with GL? uhhhh the best players in the world spam with GL man haha. Spam serves it's purpose in a serious match.....

Anyway... I played on dial-up, semi-competitively, up until 2006. I know what it's like to play on any ping from 30-380, competitively. I even played in euro tourney matches as dial-up in 4v4 (hence 380 ping). I wasn't an extremely good player, but I could always hold my own and had most of the NA tdm scene thinking that I cheat, which fueled my ego nicely.

But yeah, to be honest I can't give a decent explanation other than prediction aim and near-instantaneous aim are 2 different skills. I'm better at the first one probably.. Here are some lame demos vs. some decent players you may know, me pinging 200-300.

I forget if they're even any good, I used to suck on dial-up(considering q2's evolving meta-game opposed to modemers who used to own back in the day) to be honest but if ya'll are interested in how to own(be gay) on high ping I'd check it out.

Not really. We all have good days and bad days. Sometimes I seem to hit everything pretty good, sometimes I'm really off and get noobed to death. I guess it depends on your state of mental alertness. If I'm kinda tired or too relaxed, I don't seem to move the mouse fast enough and I get shit-kicked all over the place. If I've had a decent amount of sleep, I'm cool and collected, and I have my head in a place to where I'm thinking 90 miles a minute and I'm not getting all nervous and twitchy, I do way better. I'd assume it's the same for everyone. Some people have the ability to play like that no matter what.
