copywritten files
« on: July 19, 2009, 01:43:27 PM »
i have a chip for my phone to allow me to put music on it. I got the USB adaptor so i can get the music off my computer. It wont let me put my 'illegally downloaded' music on it because they are copywritten... anyone know a way around it?

If these are MP3 files, the software is likely checking some of the bits in the MP3 metadata, particularly the "Copyrighted" bit.

I would expect there are various free programs for editing MP3 metadata that would allow you to change the values of those flags.

Here's what the MP3 metadata looks like: http://www.gnuware.com/icecast/chap_02_10.html

If you purchased the tracks from the iTunes Store, and haven't upgraded them to iTunes plus, they are encrypted. Your best bet is to pay to upgrade them. Otherwise, you'll have burn them, then re-rip them to put them on your phone, but you'll pay the price in audio quality as a result.

Well one approach is to bring up the Recording Controls panel and select "Stereo Mix" as the recording input.

Then if you have software that will record wav files, you could play the music in one program (like grooveshark, or iTunes, etc.) and record from the Stereo Mix to a new file.  Then save it as wav or mp3.

I do this as a last resort when I want a song and I cannot find a way to buy it.  (I did this recently for a song off the Beavis & Butthead Do America soundtrack... I tried to buy it, but it's discontinued.  So I played the song in grooveshark, and recorded the Stereo Mix in Sound Forge.  Then saved as mp3.)

(You just have to be careful not to do anything that will cause your computer to "beep" while recording, as that goes through the stereo mix as well.)

it's a useful trick that can get audio from games, web videos, etc.  But now it looks like napster sells only (??) mp3's for $1.29 vs the encrypted files for $0.99, so it's no longer an issue for me.  That method is how I'd get audio from a Doom 3 demo to a sound file.

where is the Recordings Controls Panel?

For me, on XP, I double click on the "speaker" icon in the systray.  That brings up a "Master Volume" control panel, with volume sliders for Master Volume, Wave, Line In, etc.

Then I select the Options -> Properties... menu.

It brings up a box with "Adjust volume for... () Playback () Recording () Other..."

Then I click Recording, and hit OK.

And the "Master Volume" control panel, changes to "Recording Control".

For me, when I bring up Properties, where it says:

  Adjust volume for:

   ( ) Playback
   ( ) Recording
   ( ) Other

If I select "Recording", then down below it says,

Show the following volume controls:

  [ ] CD Player
  [ ] Microphone
  [ ] Line in
  [ ] Stereo Mix

...Make sure Stereo Mix is checked.

(If it's not there, then, maybe your audio card doesn't support it... :( )

The audio menues for Vista and Windows 7 are drastically different compared to windows 95-XP (which all have the same volume control panel I believe)

Lord help you figuring this out in either OS. Part of the reason most people rejected Vista was the amount of menus that were changed drastically but needed no changes what-so-ever. Some even existed and functioned properly since Windows 95, like the audio properties and volume control.

**EDIT**

I regrettably have a windows Vista laptop sitting next to me, maybe this will help.

Right click the speaker icon in your task tray and click "Recording Devices". Double click "Microphone/Line In". Click the levels tab and make sure it is neither muted or turned down. Depending on your sound card, Microphone and Line IN may be separate icons with their own volume controls. Also note that if your sound drivers are not up to date or not installed properly then your recording devices may not even show up in any sound menu no matter what OS you are using.

**EDIT** **EDIT**

Line In should be all that you need. It will pipe in everything that should be sent to your speakers. Stereo mix will basically combine both the Line In and Microphone inputs. So for this task either select Line In, or mute both your Stereo Mix and Mic. It really depends on your sound card. Some can use multiple recording devices, some you have to select between line in or mic, some offer stereo mix, and some don't. Like trying to find out what smells in an old person home, it just depends.

line in is different then stereo mix.  line in is for devices which send their own power (tape players, etc).  It reduces the volume coming in.  mic in amplifies it a bit so a mic with no power built in can still be picked up.

stereo mix records everything that you hear in the speakers.  It's not built in to Vista like it was previous windows versions, the audio drivers need to have them now.  So it may not be on his setup if he's using vista.

If there's no "stereo mix" look for something with stereo in it.
