Dialup and Q2 (problem) Help!
« on: July 06, 2009, 11:59:31 AM »
Okay, so I moved to a place where no broadband is available. I am using netzero dialup. My issue is with quake2, it was working fine at first I played for several hours. Now though, as soon as i connect to a server "connect tastyspleen.net:27931" i immediately get disconnected from the internet. It is not a netzero problem, as i have tried it with earthlink as well and it did the exact same thing. I cant think of anything that i have done since it worked to make it stop working except maybe installing drivers for my sound card. Help!

Sounds like shitty winmodem drivers. Do you have a different modem you could try, ideally one that isn't USB? My winmodem used to freeze my whole PC if I clicked links too fast in a browser. Go figure.

Hmm..

I'm not familiar with xfire, but if it pings game servers like GameSpy would, then, it should be using the same UDP protocol to ping Quake2 servers, that Q2 itself uses to connect.

Is there any possibility you have some sort of local firewall configuration that is denying Q2 ?  (Although, either way, it's strange that your internet connection actually drops as a result.)

Could your sound card be using the same hardware range / resources as your winmodem? It seems to be fine without q2 running so I would say it is something else.

Try limiting the speed of your modem down to 33.6 as your line may not be clean enough. You can also reduce your Q2 rate setting. If quake2 is causing disconnects, it is probably due to too much information trying to pass over your line and then your modem and the ISP is falling out of sync.
