Have a Dell Vista box. Installed Vista Service Pack 2. Installation failed. Windows reverted. Upon reboot, it states a reinstallation is needed because the software isn't activated. I've tried a repair, safe mode, etc.. I thinks the install is not legit and does not even let me enter the activation key! Looking online, I see I'm not the only one with this problem.

I'm always really good about adhering to the licenses for software, so this is extra offensive and annoying.

What precise error do you get

Do you use windows update, microsoft update or a standalone sp2 (standalone sp2 online/internet version or offline/lan version)

Found the windows install was corrupted and not repairable, details not important. Had found others on the MS forums with some of the same problems, eventually chose to reinstall.

as jager said have vista 64bit works so far, pre-ordered windows 7 tho

windows vista is fail ._. it crashed my $700 new laptop over 60 times within 3 days after i got it.... needless to say i went back to linux again for the last time.

my advice, if your content with sticking to microsoft os's use windows xp sp2 or sp3 (sp1 is a massive virus infection waiting to happen X.X)

if you choose linux over the corrupt land of microsoft however, almost any distro is good, if your looking for something thats a little more user friendly and easier for someone new to linux to adapt to, try kubuntu, if your looking for something good for both newbies and pros to linux, try ubuntu, fedora is a good choice too, though the debian oriented distros are always reliable and powerfull <3

I never touched vista. but basing from what i had seen it looks kinda cute (like way back using win2k and xp came out). Heard many bad things bout vista though, and win7 is about to come out. I agree that debs are stable and more convenient with features like aptget.

XP is out dated. Compared to Win7, XP is garbage now.

If u choose winxp sp2 or 3 make sure that the sp is sliptreamed in the installer. I experience that if you just update ur OS with the SP after installing its kinda slow.

For a desktop windoze is far better for obvious reasons. Availability of softwares, games, etc. Unless u have a mac but then again far less software and games available for it compared to windows.

Just got the w7 last night. Runs smooooth. On my cell as all my shit is packed. Does the q8400 by intel run x64? With a asus p5q mobo?

o.o" sorry to disapoint you, but my opinion is entirely fair to both sides, i used windows vista and windows xp much longer than linux, i almost gave vista my seal of approval...... then i started looking into the os and noticed a few things that disturbed me.. besides, why waste time on windows, linux can run windows xp within itself through a program called virtualbox ose, its not a windows emu (obviously) its a virtual pc within a pc, wich you can control the specs of said pc based on your physical machine. with ubuntu 9.4 and vbox ose, i've found windows a little outdated and useless. why pay so much just so microsoft can spy on you and such? tsk tsk. as i said before, windows xp is good, i liked it, but vista is fail, as i mentioned before it crashed my new laptop over 60 times within 3 days, all of wich were operating system fails, this happened very soon after i started telling people to get vista......... also, i cant verify any of this to be true, but check this out and do your research yourself and you'll see a few disturbing things i saw within my own os.... http://windows7sins.org/ (ps, being virus free for the past 3 weeks of having linux, compared to the constant struggle to get viruses away from windows, you do the math x.x)
