Are there any programs available to monitor the temp of your system/cpu? my computer is frequently shutting down spontaneously now summers here (its obvs overheating), and my rooms a converted attic so it really is fucking ROASTING in here. also any tips to cool the fucking thing down?

Drill + bolts + extra fans?

I added two fans to my old pc when I got it, already had spots for it though.
Never had anything powerfull that needed super cooling though.

Lived in a 3rd floor attic apartment for a summer myself. I roasted, but pc did fine.

problem is due to my ghey computer desk thing, and the temp of the air in this room it seems futile! ill try and get ahold of some more tho

Here's a realtime fan speed and system temperature monitor utility that will allow you to set custom speeds on certain fans and change voltages on things.

it's called speedfan, and its freeware:

most ATX and mid-ATX cases should have at least 2 spots to accomodate 80mm case fans like this, and almost all motherboards should have the 3 pin connectors to support AUX/SYS fans.

I recommend one drawing in on the front, and one blowing out the back of the case.

For your situation you might want to try out some 80mm Enermax fans instead, since a lot of them come with their own temp leads that you can route around inside your case for more effective temperature polling in the spots you actually want to monitor. (the only downsides are that they have shittier bearings and are often limitted to about 2000rpm)

This product is also a good way to get some free additional cooling in your case and promote good airflow:

It mounts in a standard drive bay, like a DVD/CD rom drive.

You can mount your HD in the rack of the cooling unit, apply a thermal pad and stick the top plate onto the HD and it will perform as an active heatsink with fans blowing across it. the two fans will draw air from the front of your case thru the large open grill, further promoting correct airflow, and they will blow across that heatsink to make your HD run around 8-10C cooler.

I noticed a 3-5c drop on all my temp sensors when I installed this, due to the accessibility of air from the front of the case to be blown thru my overlarge CPU cooler and sucked out the back by the casefan.

When it's getting hotter you gotta watch the airflow and try to keep the hot air out. Even a simple PSU "chimney" can prevent the hot air from getting sucked back into the case.

Even outside of the box itself, lowering the ambient temperature can do loads. See if you can set up a couple of fans on windows\trapdoors to get the air moving. Being in an attic, this is obviously a project in and of itself, but it'll be worthwhile in the future. Ambient temperature can make all the difference, and this is one thing I noticed at quakecon. In the middle of the day when things are most active and there are the most people in the BYOC, I noticed my cpu was hanging around 45-50c. In the dead hours of the night, with less bodies around, it would go as low as 28c. I may be missing some factor and just drawing conclusions, but I'd still say that lowering the room temp will do you wonders.

Afaik, the temperature of the intake air is indeed quite important to the rate of heat transfer between your heatsink fins and the flowing air.

Cooler intake air should be able to leech much more heat out of your rig than warm air.

I've always just left one side of the case open. Heat can never build up in there this way. The downside is more whirring noise from the power supply and various fans in there. But I've never overheated. Also clean out you power supply case now and then. All kinds of dust and shit in there.

I can of air duster will make a pretty noticeable difference in your operating temps, if you go in there and blow the dust film and hairballs out of your heatsinks and off of your circuitry every couple months or so.

Just dont let the can tip at all while you're blowing it out or you'll freeze shit.

Aye I always have one side of the case off as well, I did give it a good cleanout realised it was quite dusty, it has done it once since but it really is obscenely warm in this room. I have one fan pulling in air one pulling it out. cheers for the assistance

Top room of your house in the summer? 2 words...air conditioner. If you don't want the window-install type there are portables. It will make your space much more livable.
